Dual Boot W98/W2000
I am trying a dual boot system as above at the moment. It would suit me at the moment to have W98 come up as the 'default' OS in 'boot.ini', but W2000 comes up instead. I have changed 'boot.ini' to:
[boot loader] timeout=20 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] C: \ ="Microsoft Windows98" C: \ CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Recovery Console" /cmdcons (NB Spaces added at C: \ to avoid smilies) W98 is on the C:drive, W2000 on the d: drive. Try as I may it will not highlight W98. It was: default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT following install. Also I cannot get bootcfg /rebuild to run and it does not seem to be a recognised command when I type 'HELP'..............HELP!! |
Your boot.ini should read:
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=C:\ [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect C:\="Microsoft Windows" (I'm presuming you're using Win2K Pro). ------------------------------------------------------------- If it still won't work, then use the recovery console. If the console won't run, you may have to reinstall it either from the CD or by adding it to the start-up folder. See here. and here. ------------------------------------------------------------- p.s. To disable smilies when you're posting, tick the box that says "Disable Smilies in This Post". |
ORAC - thank you (again!) - I'll give that a go.

I have a similar dual boot problem, though mine is one I want to get rid of!
Someone left a Win95 recovery disk in a win2000 system, and when the computer was turned on, it created a partition with win 95 as primary, which fails to find all those cab files its looking for. I now have restored to a dual boot system, with win200 restore utility, but now most of the programmes wont work because win 2000 is now on drive E: instead of C: I have backed up all the important data files (131,000 of them) and left it for the night. Now all I have to do is sort out the rest of it. Anyone got any good tips on easiest ways to achieve getting this machine back to a win2000 only system? And the someone wasnt me, btw, before anyone says anything!!:( |
