Internet Pop-up Adverts
 

I am being driven barmy by an ever increasing plague of pop-up adverts, every time I log onto the internet.

My ISP is BTopenworld & browser is Microsoft Explorer.

I had heard that it is possible to alter the internet or browser settings, and/or there is a bit of software available to cure this, but I cannot find it on the web.

Is there any kind techie person out there, who can advise how to solve the problem? Preferably in nice simple terms that even a woman can understand! (albeit, a woman who can fly :D )

Disabling Pop-Ups
 

A "quick and dirty" fix for these, if you happen to stumble into a site which uses them, is to disable Javascript (which is the mechanism by which the page you are viewing calls them up.)

To do this in IE go to Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level, and then scroll down until you find "Scripting of Java applets" and set to "Disable".

You can run with these disabled permanently which makes your browsing a litle safer, but some sites may not display correctly -- the truly paranoid amongst us consider this to be a feature ;)

I have gone to the site on Scudhunter's link, & downloaded & installed a Pop-up Stopper program. I will let you know if that solves the problem.

If it does not, I will try RTFM's more drastic solution!

RTFM you need to disable (or set to prompt) Active Scripting to stop JavaScript. Java applets are a whole other thing.

What does RTFM stand for ? :p

Doh! You are correct, of course. This is what comes of rushing out a response, especially in the case of IE, which just has to use different terninology to everybody else's browser :rolleyes: (and in Opera, you have a switch to specifically diable popups :) )
