Wifi connection woes

I noticed recently that my old Samsung tablet didn't get any data when connected to one of the two wireless routers in our home. My wife had previously suggested that her mobile also failed to get data from the same wireless router.

Last week we changed broadband supplier and swapped out the old suspect router for the new supplier's unit and stone me it is also failing to deliver data to my tablet. Perhaps it is a tablet issue?

The other day I was out and about and thought it would be a good idea to check the roads for congestion before setting out and again before starting back. So I took my Samsung mobile phone and the same Samsung tablet and used the phone to generate a wifi hotspot and tethered the tablet to it while in a car park near to Loughboroough. It connected OK but the phone data rate was a bit poor due to being in a weak signal area. I did get up the traffic maps though and checked my preferred route was clear enough.

Thinking about the router issues prompted me to try tethering the tablet to the phone when in the house. Just like with the dodgy router it connected but failed to fetch any data. Just for completeness I tried tethering the same tablet to the phone using Bluetooth rather than wifi and everything worked really well.

So problem solved. Er no, I have a laptop PC without BT functionality. This also failed to fetch data from one of the wifi routers in the house or from the phone tether............

I have not tried to tether the laptop to the phone when out in the sticks, yet. Place your bets, will it work?

Any idea what settings I should be looking to tweak?

Do you think it might be a signal clashing issue due to strong signals from multiple routers?

Does your 'old' Samsung phone / tablet support the later 5G WiFi standards? Your new router may be a 5G Router and your phone may not support 5G. Check the specification of the router and see what it supports, then do the same for your phone / tablet. Might be time to upgrade your phone / tablet.
