iPad button drops out.
 

The button drops right out. Putting it back sounds like it allows the unit to fire up, but that's as far as she can get. No keyboard to do anything, let alone select the software button. Is there perhaps an intermediate bit that's gone missing?

I know nothing about Apple kit, other than the bewildering wealth it's created. I gather the latest company value has exceeded all previous pinnacles.

I assume the button you mention is the ‘home’ button LR?
That button died on my offspring’s ancient iPad. The solution was to get a ‘virtual’ home button on the screen. Works OK.
settings>accessibility>assistive touch (or something like that).

Sounds like he can't do that.

You can get pretty cheap (obviously not OEM parts) replacement screens, including the home button - if it is otherwise dead it might be worth having a go, and it is an interesting process. It should be fairly easy with an intact screen - I did it with a broken one and the only difficulty was retrieving all of the shards of glass.

If you need any data, that may still be recoverable via iTunes. Had an iPhone kindly put through a hot wash for me which appeared to be dead but which I managed to back up to my computer.

Got to friend's house today. Button was difficult to get out without prying it, but out it came. There was a rubber complex or warn section O ring and a strong pliable plastic ring, which was broken. In the middle was a micro switch. It only did what the button caused it to do: bring up a passive screen that on a PC would be the wallpaper. There were tiny symbols including a padlock. The screen did not react to touching.

I rebooted by holding the micro-switch in and pressing the power switch. It took an age, but finally the apple turned to an active screen. I got the reboot idea from a pal who's in her 80's. It occurs to me it's a bit of a complex way to simply restart, so I'm wondering if I've done a compete reset. :ooh:

Looks okay, and doing a factory reset needs the password. Phew!
Last night, armed with Justin's I arrived knowing it was possible to make a virtual button. It took a while, but seems to work well.

I had to give them a routine to start from cold, and the virtual button is feint in the background. Home, gets us the security code input box.

The machine is a CE 0682 with a ! in a circle. About four years old.
It's frustrating, because the parts seem to be quickly replaceable. If I can't source them I'll botch it somehow. The screen certainly is a pleasure to use after my phone.

Surely a small piece of duct tape is the easy answer?

I've recommended a cocktail stick with the point cut back to the right diameter. However, Nut's links show a good selection of quick repairs.

I wish I could get some options for the huge 4k View Sonic proximity switches on the monitor stashed in my garage. The screen glows, but I've failed to breath life into it despite resoldering masses of rather dubious-looking joints on the mother board. Nowhere could I find a replacement switch strip which refuses to acknowledge my proximity.

Covid has saved it from the local dump - so far.

What make are they

The View Sonic has nowt but a slim line of lights in a moulding on the bottom edge. Putting one's hand near a light should get a reaction from that light but it's as dead as a do-do. Well, the strip is, the screen lights, just.

VX2880ML Model number VS15802. The picture looked quite good in the garage, but a bit rubbish. Don't know what that green thing is behind.

I've just realised I have no recollection of when or where I did the work on it. Time has turned into a blur. I also don't know where the power unit is. That'll bring things to a halt if it's gone. There is no power switch on the telly. So, no reset method of a kick-start.

The sheer horror of being able to run through 60 - 70 year old conversations, but not remember when I worked on this. :uhoh:
