Hosting One's own photos with a URL
 

One the Seiko thread, 7A38 - by the numbers the owner puts a great deal of time and expense in running the sight. He was virtually held to ransom with thousands of photos on P-bucket or pay 500 ish a year for being able to see them.

I would like to post on his site, but don't want to run a P bucket account just for that. Is there anyway one can host one's own photos without cost, or indeed, is there a genuine company that does it for free?

It seems one can not use the Cloud.

Have a look at Flickr, you can upload 1000 photos on a free account. If you want to host them yourself, you need some hosting space and most accounts with ISPs don't include that these days.

GMAIL/GOOGLE gives you loads of storage for free. When I'm logged into google I go photos(dot)google(dot)com and there they are from my phone! Automagically. The phone uploads them when it see's a (free) wifi signal.

That's a good suggestion but I haven't yet figured out how to easily share a photo from Google photos to a forum. There are easy options to share on Facebook and Twitter, but I can only create a link to an entire album, not to a single photo. Then again, if you already have an Android phone you will also have a Google (Gmail) account and the associated storage option and your phone may well automatically upload everything. Personally, I would be a bit hesitant to have Google upload all my photos as I'm not that happy with their T&Cs. But that's a personal thing.
Flickr has a simple upload page, just drag and drop the photos on the page. Once you have done this, open the photo on Flickr and there is a 'share' icon at bottom right with various options. For PPRuNe, due to the way this forum software works, you only need to share one link (don't use the 'embed' option) and paste that in your post. The forum software will convert this into a small box that shows your photo and provides the option to view a larger version on Flickr.

postimage.org are good for hosting pictures that you want to share on forums - it's a free hosting site.

Hosting them yourself is a complex business - to host them on your own machine you need a static IP address (which few home-broadband suppliers will give you). You can get your own website, but that costs money and will cost you more money of lots of people access it.

Hosting for your very own domain isn't very expensive; I pay US$12 per quarter for more room and traffic volume than I will ever use with the added benefit of as many email addresses and forwarders as I want and an outgoing mail server which works for me from any internet connection.

I joined Flicker but it wasn't immediately obvious what to do, so I spent this afternoon trying to join a wire I can barely see to its PCB. I can't do that either, but at least the challenge is obvious. (I'll put that on the JB thread.)

The site I want to show these pictures on has fantastic information and very clear pictures, but as I said, the owner went through a bad time with P-Bucket. It's such a complex site that while I probably could find how they're doing now I kind of get lost in the inner workings of watches and forget why I'm there. The other trouble is that the owner puts such a vast amount of work into the site that it's like asking a London taxi driver the way somewhere. Right, left, right right left, and one step out of phase and you're in a different universe.
