Firefox Armag-addon

I'm curious as to the number of our illustrious membership and honored visitors who were affected by Firefox's certificate expiration which resulted in the disabling of numerous add-ons today. The problem commenced at 0000 hrs. GMT and was patched here in the American Midwest at ~ 2000. The problem was world-wide and made browsing potentially dangerous, since many anti-virus, script protection, and ad-blocker software was rendered ineffective in the Mozilla product. Were you affected?

Yes. That made browsing painful.
I had forgotten just how much ads and other crap my add-ons were stopping.
So glad it has been fixed.

Out Of Trim 5th May 2019 01:12

Yes, I have been affected.. Still not fixed here for me yet either! :ugh:

The fix was supposed to work via studies. I checked the box to let Firefox install studies but nothing happens. When I go back to the page later it has unchecked itself so no wonder it won't work!

My work around for now was to download the Firefox Nightly version which has the addons working. :bored:

There is a quick fix while you wait for the update.
  • Go to about:config and accept the warning.
  • Find xpinstall.signatures.required
  • Toggle it from TRUE to FALSE
The line will chang from default boolean true to modified boolean false.
All the add-ons will now work again.

Terry Dactil,

Thanks for trying to help! I tried that.. Mine was already on false! I changed it to True and then back to false.. doesn't seem to have changed anything though. No addons have appeared. I also tried another fix App Normandy interval from 21600 to 100 and restarted Firefox but no change there either. Also tried new download and reinstall but no joy. :ooh:

Terry Dactil 5th May 2019 02:21

Try this one then.
It worked for me, but needs to be done each time you run Firefox.

If you have the regular build (not the nightly/dev one) then the xpinstall.signatures.required set to false doesn't fix this. But I got all of my add-ons back by going to about:debugging. Check the box to enable add-on debugging. Then click Load Temporary Add-On. Browse to your Firefox profile in appdata:
Code:

C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<some random ****>.default\extensions
In the extensions folder there are .xpi files, those are your extensions that you had. Load each one and don't close Firefox until they fix this.

Hello Terry, I have tried both of your suggestions but somehow or other both Ghostery and AD Block plus have been deleted from my download file.

I have tried re-downloading both but Firefox refuses to let me ... I am NOT happy.

I have just found this:-
Mozilla has rolled-out a fix for this. The fix will be automatically applied in the background within the next few hours, you don’t need to take active steps. In order to be able to provide this fix on short notice, they are using the Studies system. You can check if you have studies enabled
  1. Go to > Options > Privacy & Security.
  2. Make sure Allow Firefox to install and run studies is check marked.
I you had it disabled, you can disable studies again after your add-ons have been re-enabled.They are working on a general fix that doesn't need to rely on this and will keep you updated.
No doubt "We will see" but I am not going to hold my breath!!!

Terry Dactil 5th May 2019 03:20

The fix update from Mozilla has arrived and installed itself on my computer.
about:studies now showshttps://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....52552b9f5c.jpg
I have removed all the temporary changes I made to about;config/debugging & studies and everything appears to be working normally now.

Out Of Trim 5th May 2019 03:23

They may well fix things before I find the App Data files! :(

This is a list of studies that you have participated in. No new studies will run.

Strangely,

I have the Hotfixes on Firefox Nightly that worked anyway, but still No Hotfixes on Firefox Quantum 66.03.

Sheesh!

Nervous SLF 5th May 2019 05:46

Well hush my mouth, the fix suddenly appeared and I am back to normal, well the computer I mean
is ...not me.... some say I am a tad strange :O

I have also removed the temp fixes suggested by Terry but it was very good of him to post them as I
would never in a million years have been able to think of them.

Finally got it working after following a link on Twitter..

Above link in post #12 has done the trick. Needed to reload page as well but at least this link restores matters.

Sepp 5th May 2019 10:49

Can confirm the link in post #12 worked for me too. Cheers, Out of Trim!

+1 rep... :ok:

ea200 5th May 2019 11:27

Yes, #12 has worked for me as well. Thanks OOT.

TWT 5th May 2019 12:08

Yes I've used FF on both Linux & Win 7/8.1 for years: Mozilla as an organization clearly have grave deficiencies in respect of the maintenance and support of a browser that I have relied on. I need the addons that these "Group of People" have screwed up. (FF 66.03) and I'm changing browser forthwith.

All most curious. I've been using the current version of Firefox before and right through this thread without any hint of the reported problems. Perhaps both the problem and the fix took place while I was sleeping down here in AUS... If so, that's rather fortunate by the look of it.

The Firefox update that showed up today, 66.0.4, appears to have fixed things. It allowed me to re-download and re-install adblock plus.

Makes life a lot easier here on Proone!
