Should Win 7 software be able to work on Win 10?
 

Hi all,

I have programmable electronic ignition on my '67 Mini. The software was on my XP laptop which died recently. The software is Win XP and Win 7 compatible. It will install on my new Win 10 laptop but when I open it, features are missing and it's unusable. Should I be surprised or is this inevitable? The product is no longer supported by the manufacturer :-(

The car runs fine but I want to play around with the advance curve...

There are no guarantees that it will work. You can try running the compatibility trouble-shooter (right click on the programme in the start menu, select "show file in location" then right click on the file and select "compatibility trouble shooter"), or tinkering with the compatibility settings manually (right click on the programme in the start menu, select "show file in location" then right click on the file and select "properties" and then the "compatibility" tab) and it might work or it might not. Sometimes the incompatibilities are due to things that it can't fix like the way W10 does scaling in display drivers.

Be aware that if you have installed the 64-bit version of W10 then NO 16-bit software will work - that the 16-bit compatibility subsystem from W7/8 was just too unstable and caused too much grief so it's been abandoned.

If none of this works and it's just this one application then your best option is probsably to go and buy a 2nd-hand W7 laptop or tablet (it will be cheap!) for this one job.

Could try creating an XP or Win 7 Virtual machine using Openbox and loading the software onto that. You would have to share the appropriate ports from the VM to the host laptop.

PDR1, I am using Win XP SP3 compatibility mode (tried Win 7 mode also) and running as admin. The program opens but doesn't work.

Izod, to set up a XP virtual machine I require XP software. The old XP laptop came with XP already loaded so I have no XP CD or pass codes. I have the old laptop HD in a caddy, could that be of any use? (The HD is fine, it was the screen that died.)
I should mention I'm running Win 10 Home that doesn't have Hyper-V....

Procrastinus, "good luck!" What do you mean! I don't need luck. The Mini was a fine bit of British engineering when they built stuff to last 50 years! (Oops, it IS 50 years old). Seriously, in 35 odd years of owning Mini's I've had no problems. They keep on going even if they're clapped out. They are simple enough to work on you can do it yourself at home. If something goes wrong, chances are you can fix it on the side of the road. Bits are plentiful and CHEAP! You could argue I've actually downgraded the thing by installing electronics in it. (I have the old points ignition setup in the back if the "black box" goes AWOL.). You want to talk to my mate who has a 5 series BMW. When it goes, it's a beautiful thing. But it's always breaking! One electronics failure after another, it's got something like 9 black boxes on board. It's spent more time in "limp home" mode than doing what it should. He's spent a fortune on the thing. This time, when he gets it back he's going to sell it. It does look and drive very nice, when it's going!
A few years ago I drove the Mini from Melbourne to Bali via East Timor. I didn't have to get the tool kit out the entire trip. The BMW wouldn't have made it. And when it broke down in the middle of nowhere in Indonesia, no one around would have had a clue how to fix the bloody thing...

If you're keen you could buy a used laptop on eBay or Gumtree that comes with Win7 and just use it for tweaking the Mini - when Win7 conks out in 2020 just turn the WiFi off & keep using it. I've found Lenovo Thinkpads to be reliable as used systems - the 12" "X" models are great for portability, noting they don't have a DVD drive.

You can run Windows 7 VMs for free from Microsoft in Virtual box also free. they only have a 30 day lifetime but it is pretty easy to extend them or just redo them.

According to this website: Download Windows XP for Free and Legally, Straight From Microsoft you can download a Win XP installation disc iso from Microsoft. I haven't tried it, but I have downloaded win 7 isos from Microsoft with SP1 when I recently had to rebuild an old Win 7 pc.

Has anybody had any success using Limbo PC emulator to run XP on an android device?
Reading online it can be done but I can't get it to load on my tablet. I've tried the options mentioned above with no luck. Maybe beyond my skill level...
Otherwise I'll ask around, one of my friends must have an old XP lappy I can use. Thanks for your suggestions..
