Windose 10 Creator's Update...

It has happened. After warning noises a couple of days ago, and more ominous rumbles last night (Windows is updating - Do not turn your computer off), it finally happened this morning. I could have deferred, but decided to brave it; there was no option to tell it to 'iss of and leave me alone. The process took about 90 minutes in total, this on a relatively new Dell 11" laptop with i5 and a SSHD. They do warn you that it will take a while ....

At the end of it all, little seems to have changed. My Classic Shell was still there; it knew about the 'upgrade' and advised that it was re-configuring to work with the changes. So far so good.

The reason for this post is simply to advise that when it comes, you can expect to have your computer tied up for a lengthy period while they make the changes. Whether for the better or not remains to be seen, but I'm relieved that at first glance it seems to have retained the configuration I need.

I ve been running w10 for 18 months - I find running update when it suits you cuts the very long auto updates significantly

This one isn't your standard security update but is an update for the whole OS - what used to be called a "service pack", so it will take a long time.

Update - day 3

I don't use my Windows laptop every day.
Sunday evening it decided to update.
Then again on Monday sometime.
Now Tuesday I wanted to use it, so it decided to do
a further update. I wonder if it ever occurs to the excellent
brains at Microsoft that some of us actually want to use their
device. Fortunately I had converted my old laptop to Linux.

I checked for updates yesterday and Windows 10 Creators Update (1703) installed itself, taking over an hour as has been mentioned. It also wanted to update Adobe Flash Player, but got stuck trying. So I did that manually and that was fine.

Having then used 'disk clean up' to delete previous versions of Windows, I then tried another update check - and this time Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (1709) started installing. Which took over 2 hours! Then another disk clean up session to delete 1703 and recover disk space on my mini-laptop.

A few extra icons appeared in the system tray, all of which I deleted although it took me a while to fins how to delete the keyboard language description 'ENG'....

No doubt there are some new toys, such as that Cortana thing, which I'll never use, but hopefully there won't be any nasty surprises!
