Deleting computer memory

When I start to type an e-mail address my Outlook e-mail "To" line presents me with many options of addresses starting with the same two initial characters, for instance when I e-mail friend Peter XXX I get about 8 addresses for people called Peter that I have e-mailed in the past, it makes no difference that I may have deleted some from my Contacts list, it seems that my computer memory provides all these options ?

Unfortunately, for one friend called Peter, the first option shown is an address that he no longer uses, and unless I'm quick to spot it, that is the address that gets selected.

How do I delete all the e-mail addresses that I no longer require from the computer memory ?

Worse ... said Peter e-mailed me today and instead of his "To" line showing my e-mail address, it showed my Microsoft account username and ..... my Microsoft Password ! That's scary. How did his computer know my Microsoft account details when he typed me address ?

When you say Outlook, are you using the program: Microsoft Outlook, OWA, or the Outlook Free Webmail?

Microsoft Outlook, part of Office 2007 ( I think )

Yes, pain in the bum, innit? About the only way I know is to use Ccleaner (say) to delete all autocomplete words. This is probably an even greater pita than the first, most of the time, but a strategy which helped me out in the past when 'autocomplete', carelessly used, meant that I sent a confidential and rather naughty email to the wrong 'Peter' :(

Well I'll be. Works with Eudora too. :D

I wonder if that's where MS got the idea from? ;)

When the Autocomplete suggestions are displayed, there is an X on the right hand side of them. Click this and they are removed from the list.

Not on mine there ain't. the Lifewire link gave me the answer for my system, scroll down with down arrow to highlight the garbage, then just hit the computer DEL key. Works a charm.

Also, auto-complete for addressees can be toggled on and off. For Outlook 2007, go to Tools\Options, then click the E-Mail Options button on the Preferences tab. Then, in the resultant dialog, click the Advanced E-mail Options button, and you'll find the next-to-last checkbox for 'Suggest names while completing To, Cc and Bcc fields'.

To purge the accumulated list, when Outlook is not running you can move or rename (or delete if you already have a valid backup) the .NK2 file found in your user profile's AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook folder (AppData is hidden by default).

(The current version no longer uses .NK2 files, but provides a button to clear the list adjacent to the toggle checkbox.)
