How to reply

Maybe I'm being very dim but I often see a post on this forum which is clearly a specific reply to another but cannot see any indication of which post it refers to.

There is a Post Quick Reply flag in the RH corner of each post which appears to offer this facility but once again where on the reply is a link or reference to the post it is responding to?

If you now look at the icon next to your name after 'Originally Posted': that's a link to the quoted post.

OK, that's useful, thanks (and something I hadn't spotted before) but if nothing is quoted how do you tell what the post is in reply to?

You cant.. since the forum-based quoting is a bit clumsy, some just copy+paste and format it -- then there's no reference beyond the literal text.

e.g.:
Code:

OK, that's useful, thanks (and something I hadn't spotted before) but  if nothing is quoted how do you tell what the post is in reply to?

ADDED EDITING HERE!!! :p

e.g.:
Code:

OK, that's useful, thanks (and something I hadn't spotted before) but  if nothing is quoted how do you tell what the post is in reply to?

In the quick reply, just below the text box you can choose to quote the entire text of the message you are replying to. If you move on to advanced you can edit that text for clarity/brevity/etc.

So
1. Click on 'quick reply to this message' in rh corner of post.
2. In Quick Reply box select "Quote message in reply" (You won't actually see the quoted text yet)
3. Click on Go Advanced at bottom.
4. Bob's your uncle.

OK, so I'm not so far off the mark then. When I see a reply that is clearly responding to a specific post and there's no post visible for a page or two that it makes any sense with I suppose the poster has hit the "Quick reply..." icon in the RH corner of some post way back and assumed, as I did, that there must be some visible link - but there isn't.

Thanks all!
