this morning I just wanted to check the National Lottery website to see if it had rolled over enough to tempt me but I find that I can't get the website up. I am running the latest FF browser with adblocker on a Linux Mint (Cinamon version) which is the same as last time I did this, as far as I know.

Error info given:

After trying this a few times I just thought I would check to see if it was a general problem or specific to my machine by going there on an Android tablet. It is fine on my tablet. Re-trying on the Linux machine shows that it is still U/S.

The Android tablet and the Linux machine share the same modem/wireless router/telephone line.

Any ideas?

ps - everything else seems to be fine on the Linux machine, I have just spent the best part of an hour delving into my on line bank account and had no problems with the security involved with that.

Pretty much what it says on the tin.

You've got out of date SSL libraries.

Time to do some software updates on your machine. Just because its Linux doesn't mean it doesn't need updates.... :cool:

If you are up to date on your machine, then try running Firefox with a clean new user profile (see here for instructions) and see if that helps.

You might find instructions out there on the internet telling you to fiddle with "about:config" to fix this problem ... but I say ... DON'T DO IT !!! You weaken your security by following those poorly thought out instructions !

I always run FF in Private Browsing mode and never have it remember any logins or passwords. This issue confused me as it fails to load the site even when I gurgle for lottery and click the proffered link. I do have the lottery in a bookmark which equally fails to load.

Previous versions of Linux I have used (Ubuntu mostly) have completely failed to update to a later version when I have accepted the offer and have left the machine needing a complete wipe of the hard drive and a start over installation. I have not been tempted to up version the Cinamon until now.

I'll give the FF a new user profile first.

Which version of mint are you using, the latest is mint 17?

A version or two back they changed the way they presented updates, in that you had to press the green shield with the tick rather than the blue exclamation mark appearing.

17 has reverted to the blue exclamation mark.

If you are using an older version, it may simply be that you haven't realised you need to update that version.

I went around the loop of resetting FF to defaults and it made no difference. I then re-instated ABP (add blocker plus) and still no lottery loading. Ran out of time yesterday, forgot all about it and now it is working as it should! I have no idea what occurred but it has sorted itself out now. I am using Mint 17, it is not long since I rebuilt the machine and installed a new hard drive, the fan in the old one was whistling at me.

Probably the other end. Some Security Nazi (and we do need them) or just an upgrade, likely turned off some older weaker encryption types and when a few people complained it was quietly turned back on.
