WD MyCloud

Has anyone any experience with Weston's MyCloud? My pal in Dublin has one and I managed to put a couple of photos on it, but I'm still very vague about the whole setup. For example, should not the black box show up as a drive on the normal Explorer 'Tree'?

All seems a bit convoluted, but with the right steer I might get to like it, and be able to support my Luddite friend.

N.B. I had a Seagate Black Armor which worked as a drive but I never could access it from afar. Folk on a forum had the same problem and anyway, the darn thing died just before moving home.

I assume you have been granted remote access already? I don't have direct access to my own drive at the moment, but from the local network your have to add your email to the allowed list, you should get an email from WD to confirm and select a password.

Then go their website https://www.wd2go.com and login with above details and select the drive and click view shares, and a Java applet (you might have to use a different browser or update Java if it doesn't work) will open showing the shares. Click open and it will open in windows explorer and show as a network drive. This has to be done every time you reboot your computer and lose connected, I don't think you can auto connect to the Mycloud drive.

It can be a bit of a hassle on a computer, personally I use the iPad apps for direct access especially the WDphotos app :p

Affirmative.

Done, but I was a bit worried I was about to take over the entire authority of the system. It just didn't seem to define me as some sort of guest.

I allowed Java to update.

It shows in Start. Computer okay. What it doesn't do is show on the Windows Explorer 'tree' either for me in England or him in Dublin.

(My Seagate did show as a drive with an assigned letter but I seem to remember it being a bit picky and not being there occasionally. There was however always some reference to BA (black armor) followed by a number.

Useful information that. Thanks.

I'll play some more and report.

I bought a 2TB one the other day and it took the whole day to set up. The main purpose of it was to upload material here in the UK for my family to view in Australia which has worked quite well. Once given access then they can upload photos, movies and music on to their remote access.

So far the wireless backup of my MBP is so slow that it is taking 2 days to back up my hard drive via fibre optic wifi. I still has 19 hours to go for 300gb worth of stuff.

One thing to remember it only works with wifi. I tried with my 3G iphone 6 and it came back as offline.

There is a forum available: Personal Cloud Storage - WD Community

I feel I have a lot to learn about it and when time permits I'll report back on further pros and cons, but for £90 I feel it wasn't a bad deal.

Were you not able to hard-wire connect to the router?
