Never happened before on pprune but on my screen right now is a bar of ads at the bottom and a bar to the right with a load more!!!
One says its powered by rockettab.
Where does this crap come from and how do I get rid of it?

Use AdBlock Plus.

Change your browser as required. Works with at leadt chrome n firefox.

A very very few websites dont work, but you can disable it on a case by case basis. I think I have seen two in 4 or 5 years.

My view is that if the ads are vsry intrusive I have no duty to put up with them.

Rockettab is adware whick adds itself as an extension to your browser. You probably installed it with some "free" software. It hijacks your search page and also downloads adverts as you have found. Adblock won't prevent it - you have to uninstall it from your machine.

Lot's of advice on removal on the internet. Try Malwarebytes or AdwCleaner, (both free).
