Macphun Photo Software
 

Any Prune photographers experienced Macphun photo software and care to comment? A Photoshop sub is too much from a hobbyist perspective and the built in Apple tools while decent enough only take you so far, not sure if the linked deal is a good one or not;

At £8.78 a month for a Photoshop and Lightroom bundle I'd call it a bargain for what you get !

Never heard of Macphun. Have you looked at Apple Aperture or PhaseOne Capture Pro ?

I haven't looked at Aperture in detail (will now though) or Phase One.

Price is not bad for PS, I thought it was more than that last time I looked, I'm renting music now (Spotify) so why not software too I guess :eek:

Depends when you looked... their "photographer bundle" is a reasonably new thing (introduced about 3-4 months ago) .... so you may well have looked before that and seen the prices for the full suite instead ?

From what I can tell, Macphun looks more like the Google Nik plugin for Photoshop rather than being a broader photography tool like Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture etc. ?

Guess it depends what you're after....

OP, have you tried Photoshop Elements?

Haven't used photoshop, but GIMP freeware seems quite good. I've just downloaded it and worked through the manual and it will do everything I want. I'm told, though, that it's not as easy to use as PS, but it costs nothing to download, so why not give it a try?

When Adobe switched to the subscription model, lots of people moaned, groaned, threatened mutiny and generally made a lot of mountains out of very small molehills.

But the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say. Adobe didn't suffer a loss in sales, infact quite the opposite, they've even seen a modest increase....

Why ? Because when it comes to publishing and graphic design, Adobe is the mutts nuts.

They've been at it a lot longer than everybody else (since 1988), after years of development and refinement they've now got a very mature product, anyone remotely worth employing in publishing or graphic design will know Adobe products inside out, all the printers know Adobe inside out.

It would take a lot of time, money and effort to displace Adobe's flagship publishing and design products (Acrobat, Illustrator and Photoshop). And now Adobe have done a stunning job of displacing the old publishing flagship Quark with Adobe Indesign..... so its basically hat-trick, game set & match to Adobe !

Coming back to photography, both Photoshop and Lightroom are very, very good....and although Lightroom has its competitors, I've yet to see anything that comes anywhere near Photoshop in terms of power, usability and stability.

Realistically, GIMP is not a Photoshop replacement.... well, not unless you're comparing GIMP to a legacy version of Photoshop from the 80's .... :)

damn right it isn't. One look at the interface makes me want to :yuk:.

I concur about Adobe products, they are generally pretty good (incredibly annoying update behaviours notwithstanding).
However Adobe as a company are really awful - crap support, ruinously expensive, and generally arrogant beyond belief.
Shame, as there's no alternative... reminds me of Jeppesen...... let that guide your moral compass accordingly :E
