Did I aske about gmail's looooooong delay in appearing on the screen?

I felt sure I'd posted this before, but my brain only remembers details from 60 years ago.

Why does it take so long for words to appear when typing on gmail? 5 seconds is not unusual. I've un-ticked the encoding box and that seemed to make it better for a while, but now it's bad again. It's really not worth keeping as it is, but I'm lucky to get my name without numbers, so want to make it work.

I can only assume something is reading my keystrokes as nothing else would delay it that long, surely? Very worrying.

Try a different browser, or use a mail client such as Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail

That's because they have to go via the NSA first or because you type very slow.

Loose rivets 9th Jul 2014 10:12

Slow? I can type as fast as I can speak, and that's why it's so frustrating.

NSA? Well, wouldn't surprise me. I have, or had guns in the US, and often talk about them. Indeed, by Browning Medalist is currently for sale on a dedicated forum. However, I've passed all the FBI checks etc., for concealed carry . . . Oh, FBI ! there's another one they'll pick up on. Will they send their black choppers to the UK I wonder? :ooh:

Seriously though, I'll have to look at alternatives as gmail is just unusable as it is. Shame.

Will they send their black choppers to the UK I wonder?

A genuine letter (as far as I could tell) appeared in Ask Playboy years ago.

Q: "How do I know if the FBI or CIA are tapping my phone ?"

A: "Write and ask them. And if they weren't before, they will be after receiving your letter."

W7 with four gig on 32bit and W7 6 gig on 64 bit

I see that in one PC mag at least, gmail is top of their review. Tonight, it's driving me crazy with the delays - some words taking three or four seconds to catch up. This is on all my computers - one has six gig - so I'm totally flummoxed, because no one would tolerate this so I have to conclude its in the settings or some such.

Good reviews and my real name without numbers. I'd like to use it if I can.

Much head banging at Rivet towers.

Gmail doesn't do that on any of my devices using Chrome. I'm not saying that Chrome is any better, because most browsers seem to get twitchy from time to time. I too would try another browser.

I did this years ago and now wish I hadn't. Every week some American goes and buys a car/washing machine/sex and puts my email address on the form.

I am planning to switch to one that is bent a bit real soon now...

I was so pleased to beat the system and just have my name that I didn't think about it the other way around.

I finally got around to testing the delays while in a new "Compose" box. It was fine. I then went back to another file in the Inbox and replied to that. The delays were as bad as ever - equal to writing five words sometimes.

Does that give any clues? The idea of a buffer not coping does seem plausible, but I have no idea what to do.

It's funny, but I got to like the chain logic, so worst scenario I'll have to paste in from a virgin box. Don't want to have to open Word or somesuch.

I don't use Gmail on the PC much - I have it for my Android, and use the app. However, I've just logged in on my fairly modest Win 8.1 machine, and my moderately fast typing is accepted with no delays whatsoever in both the new message and the (apparently) new feature reply box. I even just pressed random keys as fast as I could with multiple fingers, and there was no obvious delay. Browser is Firefox 34. I would suggest therefore that it is something running on your machine which is causing the issue rather than Gmail - is your AV somehow scanning as you type?

Thanks for your input. It does sound as though it's very specific.

I run Kaspersky courtesy of Barclays Bank. I've paused it for several minutes to test the result, but of course, I'm not sure if there's anything running in the background.

There has to be a reason. No normal person would put up with this.

More tests needed. I'll chop some item via Taskmanager and see what happens. Running on 32 bit does leave me with limited memory, but it's happening on my 64bit 5 gig laptop, though I have to say, it's not as bad.

I feel I must have some basic setting wrong. Using FF 33.1 at this time.

Just ran the tests again. When I Reply, the trouble starts. No problem when just in Compose screen.

Did this with most things killed via TM end process, but it was the same before when I didn't kill any running software.

TM is showing system memory as:

3327 Total

2012 Cashed

2087 Available

131 Free

Not usual to have slow gmail.

Try typing in notepad, word, jota or something and then doing copy-paste into gmail.

Loose rivets 7th Dec 2014 16:30

Just pasted in from gmail's ordinary fresh screen:

This is a test of the buffering thing. I don't know what's happening but it seems okay on COMPOSE. This has been typed quite briskly with not a single delay.

I can use this to cut and paste, but it's not the point. Why has gmail singled me out to do this when no one else suffers the problem? I'm feeling victimized. :uhoh:

There has to be an answer.

Have you tried logging in from a different terminal, say a public access one in your local libray? This might diagnose whether it is account or hardware problem.

(To join a UK library, you need photo id plus utility bill)
