Quote button, smiley & icon failure

Someone noted this a couple of days ago, but because it didn't affect me - then - I failed to take note.

Since day 1 on PPRuNe I've contributed to earlier posts by occasionally copying previous comments into my answer, then used the "Wrap (QUOTE) tags around selected text" button, i.e the one to the left of the # mark, 3 in from the right, that puts the text in a blue box - as everyone else does.

As of two days ago this has stopped happening, the QUOTE button is dead.

WTF ??

Bushfiva 26th Feb 2014 01:35

WTF ??

Seems OK here.

llondel 26th Feb 2014 02:10

Could be a javascript failure. If I block scripts from the page then the icon tools don't work.

ExSp33db1rd 26th Feb 2014 06:00

Bushfiva - I know, it seems to be working for everyone else, so what am I doing wrong - suddenly ?

Llondel - How might that have happened, I'm not aware of having denied Java anything recently, and more to the point - how do I change anything that I might have inadvertently touched, now?

Thanks.

Bushfiva 26th Feb 2014 06:50

Have you updated your browser or using a different browser? I can reproduce your problem in IE11. The smilies don't work either, right?

(quote=someone)rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb(/quote)

But with square brackets - works every time.

The above done by clicking on "Reply" in the post you want to quote (in this case your post). Then in the address bar that appears on the "Reply To Thread" page - http://www.pprune.org/newreply.php?d...9945&noquote=1 - delete the number 1 at the end of the address and then click return. The quote will appear in its entirety already formatted. You can then delete any part of the quote that you don't want to appear. When your post and quote appear on the thread page the name of the person quoted appears automatically together with a http://www.pprune.org/images/buttons/viewpost.gif after the name. Clicking this takes you to the quoted post in the thread.

ExSp33db1rd 26th Feb 2014 19:53

Thanks, I'll give it a go next time I want it.

Henry - [ ] { } ( ) all work if I type them in from the keyboard, the problem is with the Quote button on the taskbar, it was previously only necessary to highlight the previous text, then hit the button, which doesn't actually use brackets, but highlights the text on a blue background - now it ain't working as in the past, and as appears to still do for everyone else.

henry_crun 26th Feb 2014 21:51

Speedbird - the reason I type direct in forum code using [ ] is that it always works, whether I plug in a keyboard or whether I use my big fingers on a tiny seven inch touchscreen. It is also easier to cascade commands like center, image, color, size, bold etc.

Similar reasoning to typing in HTML when making a webpage - no assist needed. Stand alone, stand tall.

Quote button etc

Anyone else not have a quote button, multi quote button, quick reply button etc to reply to posts on pprune?

Most forums I go on have all these.

I only have a reply button, would like to have the quote button and have asked the administrators about it but they're pretty much no help at all. :ugh:

BOAC 3rd Mar 2014 18:59

This one has too - it is in the editor panel.

Not Nightowl 3rd Mar 2014 19:17

BOAC quote: "This one has too - it is in the editor panel."

Nope!

Looked at the help page and the stuff below, I have no quick reply button, no quick editor box etc.

"As a registered user you can go to a forum on a board where you have permission to view threads and leave replies. To reply you have a few options. You can click on the 'Post Reply' button Post Reply and add a new post to the end of the thread. Alternatively, you can leave a quick reply in a quick editor box listed below the posts in the thread.

When using 'Quick Reply' you can choose to quote a particular post if you are replying to something someone wrote. You may need to click the quick reply button Quick Reply in a post to activate the quick reply box before you can type into it.

If you want to post replies to multiple posts you can select them by clicking the multi quote button Multi quote. This button will change to indicate that you've selected it. Clicking post reply will then bring you to the full editor with all the posts quoted." :ugh:

I have one on all the Forums I peruse, including this one, but ... it no longer works ! stopped about 10 days ago.

See my thread Quote Button Problem about a week ago for replies.

KBPsen 3rd Mar 2014 19:34

I for one is grateful there is no quote button. Far to many people have the habit of quoting the entire post they are responding to leading to a bloody mess of a thread.

Having to cut and paste the bits that are relevant to quote cuts down on that nonsense.

Saab Dastard 3rd Mar 2014 19:40

Not Nightowl, what editor are you using?

You need to check you are using the Standard Editor:

User CP\Edit Options\Miscellaneous Options\Message Editor Interface\Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls

SD

Gawd!! Brilliant! The above worked as advertised, thanks!!

vulcanised 3rd Mar 2014 19:42

Make that two!

Some forums/fora are a pain to try and read, where damn near every post, sometimes just a few words, is dwarfed by the quote, usually of the previous post.

Tried the above Saab Dastard, my setting is as above.

Not to confuse you now I did a trick that Democritus suggested being;

The above done by clicking on "Reply" in the post you want to quote (in this case your post). Then in the address bar that appears on the "Reply To Thread" page - http://www.pprune.org/newreply.php?d...9945=&noquote=1 - delete the number 1 at the end of the address and then click return. When your post and quote appear on the thread page the name of the person quoted appears automatically together with a after the name. Clicking this takes you to the quoted post in the thread.

It works! ???? Go figure. :hmm: Thanks anyway.

Nope, works for me.

Which browser? Have you tried a different one to see?
I have no problem in Firefox. I'll wander over and try Chrome.

Interesting ... this is Chrome, which has dropped the original quote but kept my addition.
