Power Saving settings, Win7
In my paranoid attempts to reduce my energy bills, I now have a 20min 'sleep' on both monitor and hard drives. As far as I know, nothing 'polling' inside 20 minutes.
When I initially 'saved' the option it worked fine. After a couple of days, only the monitor shuts off, but re-saving the scheme restores the hard drives setting. Anyone else had this and where should I look for the problem? |
reboot,? should save the settings
|
Well, the 'settings' are there on every reboot and are correct? Why should another reboot make any difference?
Update: I had an email 'trawler' (Mailwasher) set to trawl every 22 minutes (power settings at 20) but by changing that to 25 I seem to have cleared the problem, so I assume the timing of Windows 20 or Mailwasher 22 was not accurate. |
The other 'unknown' is polling 'internet time' - my machine is set to use 'time.windows.com' - anyone know how often it connects?
|
It checks once in 24 hrs.

time.windows.com is a sorry and pathetic NTP service.
Much better to use one of the NTP.org pools - e.g. uk.pool.ntp.org for the UK. SD |
Thanks both - duly changed.

BOAC:
Keep in mind that the 'sleep' scheme is fine under Win7 for a power-saving initiative. However, be very wary of 'hibernate'. It is not unknown for systems to enter the hibernate state and subsequently fall into a coma. One that is not easily remedied either. Even here at work all the I.T. people have been instructed to NOT place systems into hibernate for that very reason. (I have received no such instructions as it is known throughout that 'He doesn't do Windows. He's that penguin guy.') |
