Firefox connection reset.
 
I am using Firefox 16.0.2 and it has begun to not being able to connect to any website. All I get is a "The connection was reset" message.

I have uninstalled then reinstalled, disabled all add-ons, reset and even done a system restore but nothing has helped. All other browsers work just fine.

Any ideas what to do next?

Interestingly we're now on release 17.0.1. I found 16 a bit unstable.

Thanks for that, BOAC. Unfortunately none of the steps suggested in the link solved the problem. Neither did updating to FF 17.

It worked fine this morning and now it's buggered. No other updates have been installed today and as even a system restore to a configuration from 2 weeks ago didn't fix it it's all a bit strange. A virus scan didn't find anything either.

Are you using Norton DNS. I get this regularly.

Well, V17 has cured the Java load up problem that I had the first time I used FF each day, after the first hissy-fit it would be fine for the rest of the day.

try switching to google DNS and see if the problem goes away.

16.0.2 currently working fine here, other than java.
If I need java I go to Mrs gates' product.

I tried switching to Google, Comodo and OpenDNS but that didn't help. I would also have thought that if it was a DNS issue then all browsers would have been affected? As I mentioned earlier other browsers worked just fine (other browsers being IE9 and Chrome).

After having done a system restore to a 2 week old config, and as switching DNS, disabling firewall and anti-virus didn't help, I started uninstalling WIN7 updates and that did the trick. Why weeks old updates would suddenly stop Firefox from working I have no idea.

I ran windows update again and reinstalled all the updates. So far FF is still working.

Perversely, I'm having problems with 17.0.1 - won't load Youtube and Vimeo links that are posted in JB .

Switching to IE 9.0.8112.16421 works just fine for the video clips.

M's online banking refused to work yesterday, having been fine for years.
With Firefox, it got to the "Confirm payment" bit, then dropped back to the account summary and didn't make the payment.

I tried with Chrome, and it worked fine.

So I went back and looked more carefully. One of my Firefox plugins is HTTPS-Everywhere. It seems the bank now has a non-HTTPS tracker running alongside the HTTPS main site, and that offends the plugin. I think I agree with the plugin about that.

There appears to be a java/firefox interoperability problem at the moment as I'm get the "you need Java to view this site" message on some sites.

yup.
Been going on for some time. Currently on 16.0.2. on 7/64. I think it was bad on the previous ff too. Java won't work. So I just use Mrs Gates' browser where java is needed.

the problem is when the online payment verification screen kicks in, NoScript sees that as cross-site scripting (which it is) and blocks it
You've a choice: play with the config settings of NoScript (and possibly AdBlock plus) or do what I do:
use Mozilla plus plugins for day-to-day browsing, relatively safely
but reserve IE specifically for online purchases and nothing else

Not that simple Milo, it happens on my e-mail (BT) with noscript disabled, it's also happened a couple of times on here. Unfortunately it's not consistent.

Please also mark me down as being dissatisfied with FF version 17.0.1. (Using XP up to date).
Problems noted:
1) Occasional blank screen after clicking on a link or bookmark, followed by nothing. Close active window - try again - works OK.
2) Occasional milky / opaque screen after clicking on a URL found in a Gurgle search - followed by nothing. Close active window - try again - works OK.
3) A return of a previous issue where saving a PDF file in Foxit viewer (or acrobat -doesn't matter which) causes the machine hang / freeze for up to 30 seconds before returning control to the user. This was happening with earlier versions but was fixed somewhere around v13 or similar. Now it's back :ugh:

Is it all that difficult or dangerous to re-install the previous version - or roll back to it?

And there's the stupid opening message present in some earlier versions of Thunderbird but especially annoying when one starts version 17: "This folder is being processed. Please wait until processing is complete to get messages." which requires an OK click to get on with the main functions of the program. Infuriating! We know it takes .05 of a second for things to happen. We accept that. So why make us acknowledge a silly damn message which states the bleedin' obvious, before allowing access to the program's functions? :confused:

Don't know what's gone wrong with Firefox Google browsing.

If I enter a search term and hit the 'search' button nothing happens.
If I then hit F5 it carries out the search and returns the result.
This problem appears with:

https://www.go ogle.com/
https://www.go ogle.co.uk/


but not with:

https://www.go ogle.com/webhp?complete=0
http://www.go ogle.com.au/

The Google defect disappeared a few days ago but now one of the RAID discs is reporting a problem. Investigating that will have to wait.
I didn't do nuffin' - honest!
