MS XP Modem Problem
 

I've recently installed XP and now my modem does not release the telephone line after disconnect - the telephone line either has an engaged tone or a soft background hiss until I physically disconnect the modem from the wall.

Any ideas ?

Quite a lot of modems are not compatible with XP yet and neither MS nor the modem manufacturer know it, it can be a case of going to the modem manufacturer website and downloading new drivers but not always.
I have tried three separate internal modems that don't work and have had to settle for an expensive external one. You are lucky as yours connects! My three could not even detect a dialling tone.:(
