Google Translate
Can anyone point me to some guidance relating to Google Translate. I've joined a German forum, and was told to set my forum preferences as German and use Google Translate automatic German to English to read the forums.
But how do I set Google Translate to work? Can it be set as a toolbar on the web page, or do I have to cut and paste everything to the Google web page? |
using i.e. 8 I just right click on the page and select translate with bing.

Thanks for that.

Tosh - a general comment. I live in an international community and work in a similar environment. I'm always having to translate between English, French, Catalan, Castilliano, and German. The first four languages translate using Google quite well but into and out of German from any of the others is hopeless.
I have fair to excellent knowledge of all these langauges (learned phonetically) except for Castilliano which I refuse to have anything to do with, but usually I rely on Google for accuracy and precision. All google's German translation ever does is make my German friends laugh when they read it. Fairly obvious why when you know how German is constructed. OFSO |

If you use google chrome browser then you it will put a button at the top whenever the page is displayed in another language and give you the option to translate, this then remains "set" for the rest of your session browsing that particular site.
Hope this helps - I use it alot. |

Google translations from German are often usable if you can find the verb (usually somewhere at the bottom of the page) and move it into the right place. |
Translating between English and German is a "challenge" if you want to get the syntax to be the way the native speaker would do it. I saw a fine example this morning:
Komponiert in den Jahren 1861, 1865/66 und 1868. Erstaufführung der vollständigen Fassung am 18. Februar 1869 unter Leitung von Carl Reinecke im Gewandthaus zu Leipzig. Composed in 1861, 1865-66 and 1869; the complete version was premièred at the Leipzig Gewandhaus on 18 February 1869, conducted by Carl Reinecke. Both, in my view, exactly how a native speaker would write it if not translating from the other language. I don't think Google translate can cope with complex German sentences and comes unstuck with them. |
