iPhone 3GS?
Hi all,
So... whos getting one? Whos sticking with their iPhone 3G? Anyone that annoyed with it they're looking elsewhere? Would be interesting to know. |
I'm seriously considering getting one, but O2's tariff's are a bit of a joke and have monopolised the UK market, so they're taking the pi$$ with their prices, and to be honest, for the sake of a few gimmicks, I can't justify signing up for a minimum of 18 months and have to pay for the phone as well. . .
Unless someone can convince me otherwise! |

The new one is not worth getting at the price they are quoting.....I'll stick with the old one (Identical in looks) and the big software update that is coming next week...
I don't use video, not fussed about the camera pixels and it does everything quick enough for me....:ok: |
I've got a 2G one at the moment, but the new MMS and Internet tethering isn't going to work on the 2G so I would like an upgrade..
I'm debating between iPhone 3G or 3GS, can't make up my mind. |

Likewise the link says the 3G is only 8gb whereas I own a 16gb one (perhaps this is moving forward - I dont know). If the camera is not important then I would say try getting a 3G cheap when the 3GS comes out as there is little difference on face value between the hardware that I can see (please correct me) that the OS update does not already address. |
Internet tethering isn't going to work on the 2G With the internet tethering you need a seperate dataplan bolt on with 02 (not sure about foreign providers) it does not come from your unlimited internet access you already have on the phone. Prices start at around £14 per month for 3gb (residential users) which is restricted to 3gb on 3G and unlimited over the Cloud/bt openzonei etc - The price drops slightly for corporate users. And the price per mb when you go over is quite steep. If you are on pay as you go you cannot get/use the tethering service. It is around the same price as a USB dongle so may work out better to get one of those instead..... The information I am quoting from can be found here:- Internet Tethering - iPhone |
Jofm5,
The hardware i.e processors is much quicker on the new iPhone although they haven't yet released the exact processor and memory speeds as of yet. Just to add on the tethering WiFi, in the past your phones serial number would be the only device that could be used on the Cloud/BT network. From the update, you are going to be able to use two devices on the cloud network only, meaning BT won't work while tethering the device. |

From the update, you are going to be able to use two devices on the cloud network only, meaning BT won't work while tethering the device. Not sure what your saying about the above about 2 devices and BT Wont work. Please clarify... My understanding from what I have read (and I could be wrong and its late now) is that you pair your device(s) to the iphone via either blue tooth or wifi (or both) and that you use your iphone as the modem/access point - which then decides whether to use the 3G connection or the WiFi connection if available to access the net. According to the O2 link I posted above on tethering it is Cloud/BT Openzone and partners that the unlimited access is on with you paying based upon 3g/cellular allowance. |
I'm pretty happy with the current 16GB iPhone. Battery life isn't an issue and I don't use the camera that much. Mind you the photos it does take are pretty good anyway.
Good chance that I'll upgrade in 12 to 18 months to the 3GS. This new firmware 3.0 update will make the current iPhones a much better platform anyway. |
At the moment, when you connect to the Cloud/BT WiFi Network, it registers you with a Mac Address and a phone number. Your Mac Address is assigned to your handset, meaning you can only connect to those wifi providers using the iPhone.
From the new update, when you make your iPhone a dongle you will have one added Mac address for the laptop/computer of your choice on the Cloud network. What that basically means is that you can use your iPhone device on both BT/Cloud Unlimited without any problems, but when your iPhone become a dongle and your laptop becomes the device you can only use the cloud because BT aren't letting us add an extra Mac Address... I'm sorry if it's not any clearer, it's hard to explain lol |
If they'd allow a contract extension so i could move straight from my 3G to the 3GS I might consider it, but they don't.
Those who bought the 3G a year ago have a minimum of 6 months to go on the present contract. The only options you have are to buy your way out of the previous contract or buy a new one and run them in parallel. For the minor improvements it will provide over the 3G with V3.0 software it's just not worth it. I'll see out my present contract and think about replacing it then. I have my suspicions that an awful lot of other users will think the same and I don't believe that there are a lot of possible new buyers out there, as opposed to upgraders, especially with the Palm pre about to hit the shops. So I suspect that, after a few weeks to catch the few who will pay the extra, they'll have to offer a deal to shift the new phones. We'll see. |
From the new update, when you make your iPhone a dongle you will have one added Mac address for the laptop/computer of your choice on the Cloud network. What is not clear is how many devices can be tethered at the same time, I read what you were saying as one and after you have tethered one you wont be able to tether another - however from the links text to me by 02 it appears you can have devices connected by wifi and blue tooth which also implies (and is not entirely clear) that many devices can be tethered at once. Will have to wait and see I guess. |
But, at £14 a month extra on your contract it's not worth buying a new one just so that you can have tethering. You would be better off getting a seperate dongle and saving 500 quid!!

This picture compares the running costs of the iPhone 3GS and its competitors, over a 24-month period, in the USA. (It's too big to embed.)
Scary. I think I'll hang on to my nearly 3-year-old HTC S620 for a little while longer, thank you very much. |
I get photo unavailable when viewing that bnt.
|
It did work earlier today. Iphone was the most expensive at $3600 over 24 months, unlimited talk and data? Seems like a lot of money for a mobile phone. :8
SD |
24 months would be around £840 pounds on O2. A way bit less than the yanks...Take out the cost of the phone and I don't think it's that bad.....:bored:
|
Tried the image link again - definitely working. I do check links before I post them, y'know ... :hmm:
|
bnt -
all a bit strange - still says photo unavailable to me. |
