Any body help with an i phone/ i tunes problem?

Had both for a while now and no previous probs - But, last night I put a few songs on the i tunes (PC) and plugged the phone in for a "sync" and B*!!*r.

Message told me that I did not have enough memory to place 4+ Gb of songs on my phone. Now the confusing bit - my entire i tunes library is only 4+ Gb (I only added 2 cd's). Anyway my phone now has no songs or video's on it albeit; it seems to think that there is still 4gb of songs on it! In other words - they have all gone from the phone but the phone does not think so! and to put things right it needs to load another 4 Gb of song from the library that are already indicated as there!

Other than "bin it" any suggestions
