Modem problem

My main PC is XP home edition and is connected to Virgin broadband via a Scientific Atlanta modem using Firefox as browser. I've been trying to connect my laptop (Vista home premium) to this modem via ethernet and USB but cannot get it going. The ethernet simply does not register. I downloaded and installed the USB drivers and the laptop detects "unidentified network". If I click on "repair" it assigns me an IP address and I can connect but - the PC then cannot connect to the internet. If I click repair network on the PC then it connects again but the laptop loses connection:ugh:

I have ticked all the relevant boxes regarding detecting settings and allowing other computers to access the net etc etc. Am I neglecting something very basic here or do I have a problem?

Cheers.

Have you installed the Vista usb drivers for that modem? If not go here and get them: Consumer Products - Cable Modems

I would surmise that you are attempting to connect two devices simultaneously to a modem that can only support one connection.

It is probably an either / or for USB / Ethernet.

If you want to support multiple PCs on your home network, buy a switch / router / wifi access point to share the single connection.
