56k Modems

I have a 56K V90 modem, how does this 56k relate to the actual rate I can download ???

When downloading files, the maximum rate I get is 5.2 or 5.3 kbps.

Also what difference is V92 going to make?

I usually go straight to the rumours and news forum, the nice people at PPRuNe told me that if I right click on a page link and open it in a new window, then it will show the full URL. Bookmark/favorite this and you can bypass the main page saving time and bandwidth. ;) ;) ;)

P.S. For all the people who miss NAPSTER, visit www.winmx.com it is just as good but faster and also uses some form of smart-download.

Diablo,
there was a thread on this a little while ago. As far as I can remember, the 56K relates to bits per second, whereas the displayed download rate relates to bytes per sec. One byte is eight bits minimum, normally about ten, so the maximum download rate is roughly 56 divided by ten equals 5.6K bytes per sec, so you're doing pretty well at 5.2! AS for V92, haven't a clue, I'll leave that to the experts.

Ho hum, where's my slide rule?

Good point regarding the bits - bytes business Groundgriper. People often forget the stop/start packeting bits so dividing by ten gives a better rule of thumb for real life data rates.

Diablo, loads of information out there regarding V92. The standards site gives a lot of dry technical stuff but a few minutes with a search engine will pay dividends.
