Internet Explorer problem

I am using IE 5.5, every time I open a link in a new window, it dosen`t open to the maximum size but about 1 cm short at the right hand side of the screen. Its not a major problem, but it can be a bit annoying at times. Any ideas on how to sort this out?
Thanks.

The size of your explorer window defaults to the size that was set when not maximized. Un-maximize (restore) explorer and then stretch it to the size you like. The next window opened will default to this size even if your are running maximized.

I have been using IE 6 Beta for a couple of months and liked it.

I now have the latest release of it and it is infinitely better and seems much more stable, and quicker. I definitely like it and they have removed the irritating bugs - and added a few little goodies too.

adjust the size of an "unmaximised" instance of the browser to a size you like. Then hit the black cross top right.

Next time you open a new window, it will open up to the smaller size you selected.

:D

I agree with PPRuNe Pop.

IE 6 final version is stable and quick.

Definitely worth the download.

Yuppers..! Just upgraded from IE6 Beta to IE6 Proper. :D It IS quicker!! :o I will have to wait and see if it is more stable though. Mind you, the Beta version was pretty stable anyway! ;)

Thanks WDTBD; I set it in motion while I go and do some gardening...

fobotcso 15th Oct 2001 14:55

Well it was a better day for gardening than for upgrading IE!

Actually, IE upgrade was fine but McAfee VirusScan broke. During the reboot, Windows announced that "WebScanx.exe has generated errors and Windows is closing the program etc, etc." Won't go away.

WebScanX.exe (Ver 4.5) is a McAfee program and without it there is no protection from web viruses during connection. Basic System scan is fine.

IE 6 Uninstall worked OK and McAfee (Ver 5.21) is back to normal.

Neither MS nor McAfee address this problem in their FAQs or Tech Support info. Almost certainly a DLL incompatibility; I'll wrestle with it and get back in case someone else may benefit. I'll start with taking out McAfee, reinstalling IE 6 and reinstalling McAfee.

Damn computers!

Fobotsco....................

If you disable Mcafee while you download you shouldn't have any problems. I have found this to be the case for ALL downloads.
Hope this helps

Thanks flyby... Excuse late response. Too much gardening before the Wx changes.

I'm not normally bothered by normal downloads such as e-mails, attachments and ftp transfers. That is, after all why we have our Anti Virus stuff running. But upgrading on-line is different so your advice may be worth heeding. Incidentally, McAfee gave me grief and extra work because I couldn't enable e-mail scanning. Until I found the bit hidden on their Web Site that says you can't activate e-mail scanning on a domestic system. It's all done by Download Scanning.

Incidentally again, I haven't yet figured out how to uninstall McAfee other than manually deleting the files and cleaning out the Registry (which I'm quite used to doing but it is tedious).

Similar sort of problem:

Whenever I open mutltiple links in new windows, they all shift over the screen a bit. Any idea how to get rid of this so they all open in the same position? Obviously did the strecht and fit to the correct position bit, closed the window, but they keep shifting for every new window opened. Slightly irritating when you fit it neetly to the right side of the screen, number 1 goes exactly there and then number 2 opens on the left :(

NMC:

All sites or just one in particular ?
The positioning of the child window(s) can be controlled by the site's author via JavaScript.

No Mode Charlie 21st Oct 2001 22:54

Any site, say for example on Pprune. If I open three threads into three new windows from the main subject page, they'll open into a slightly different position. Normally just a bit to the right and down.

PaperTiger 22nd Oct 2001 00:55

Oh, that ! I thought you meant they were jumping about all over the screen.

It's part of the GUI standard for the presentation of multiple windows. The options are Cascade (which you describe), Tile Vertical or Tile Horizontal. Cascading leaves just the window title and File menu visible so you can access each open window with a single click.
You can play with the options by right clicking a vacant area of the Taskbar (down there at the bottom). Never did see much use for tiling myself unless you have a ginormous monitor.

Nothing you can do about it AFAIK, but then I'm no Windows guru.

No Mode Charlie 22nd Oct 2001 21:02

Cascade, that's the word I was looking for. But does anybody know how to turn that silly option OFF? It drives me mad :(

Kermit 180 23rd Oct 2001 12:48

Funnily enough, I was reading this thread yesterday when my explorer (version 5.5) ceased working and I got one of those annoying Microsoft warnings, saying I had to reinstall explorer from my Windows disk.

No way I said, and restarted my PC with my fingers crossed that the warning was wrong. It was. Taking the advice that IE6 was much better and more stable with lots of goodies, I did the download.

Ive had it running nearly nonstop for a day and a half with no problem whatsoever. Wonderful, and I just love the way it squeezes pictures to fit the screen and the new media toolbar.

A big thankyou to those who recommended it, my Explorer problems appear to be over.

Kermie :)
