Uploading a youtube file?

Just spent an hour uploading a file of me dog to youtube and it does not appear to have arrived,does a file for youtube have to be in some particular file format?,not a lot of information on the upload page about this??

PS the clip I uploaded was downloaded to my desltop from a mobile phone camera, properties says it's a VLC media file (mp4) and is 3.3 MB
Thanks in advance for any advice.
