Freecom USB 2 DVD writer installation snags

Any thoughts appreciated!

Installing a freecom external usb DVD writer onto an older fujitsu simens lappie (approx 3 yrs old). XP with S/P 2 installed, with USB 2.0 ports. On plugging the drive in,the usual "found new hardware" followed by "found Freecom DVD writer" appears, to be replaced by "found cd-rom drive" then "a problem occured installing your hardware. It may not work properly" etc. On checking device manager the drive appears under DVD/CD drives with the snag exclamation mark next to it and the status page says:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41).

The drive works fine on other pcs/lappies but is needed to work on this one. Thoughts and points please, answers on a postcard....

Is there by any chance a mains power adaptor for the freecom, or does it work purely off USB power?

If the latter it might be a power issue. It shouldn't be, but it might!

Have you checked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 to see if any of the options listed help you resolve the problem?

cheers for the link MDC, actually an article linked from that article looks like it might hold the key (error 41 vice 31), dont have the machine to hand right now to try it out but will give it a go later and keep y'all posted....
