Laptop Updates

My laptop (Toshiba A100 running XP MCE2005) will no longer update windows from www.windowsupdate.com

When I try to open the page, the status bar (at the bottom of IE) says "website found: awaiting reply" then hangs

Even when I formatted the harddrive and reinstalled Windows from the recovery disk, it still won't update.

Anyone got any ideas?

Check the options/info left of screen.

Could it be that you are running XP with service pack 1 installed.

Microsoft no longer offer any support or updates for SP1, so this could be the cause.
When you reinstalled XP from the recovery disk, there is a very good chance that it was the basic installation of XP without any of the service pack updates.

I think that you can download SP2 from the microsoft website.

It's not an SP2 issue - The Laptop was only baought in January 2007 and is running MCE2005 which is already SP2'd

It's the only site this happens with.

This might also be worth a go?

Check the 'hosts' file in xx:\windows\system23\drivers\etc

Comment out references to Microsoft using # at the beginning of the line (used a text editor) and save the changes. The update program might work.

Have you checked the Windows firewall setting as well?

Go to Microsoft on line support. They will sort it out.
Did a great job for me last week. You deal one to one with a techie via email.
