Is there a limit to how much RAM??

Hello squibbler, it appears that you have not posted on the forums for several weeks. Why not take a few moments to ask a question, help provide a solution or just engage in a debate with other members in any one of the forums?
Well.....ok then!

I'm thinking about adding some RAM to my Sony Vaio VGN-FS550 laptop. Currently both slots are occupied with 256Mb modules of PC2700 DDR SDRAM (SODIMMS). I was thinking of popping in a couple of 1Gb modules but the Sony manual and website say the maximum the system can take is 1Gb via 2 x 512Mb mods.

Is that right? Will it grind to a halt if I stick 2 gigs in there?

Sorry if this is a lame question but I'm a bit of a computer duffer these days :O

Oh and will 2Gb make a huge difference from 1Gb? The system comprises a 1.6 Centrino, 512Mb Ram, 128Mb Integrated graphics (Intel 910/915 chipset), 80gb hard drive, running on Win XP. I'm just looking for a bit of extra poke when burning DVDs, home vids etc.

Cheers

"Will it grind to a halt if I stick 2 gigs in there?"

Yes (or it just won't recognise it).

"Oh and will 2Gb make a huge difference from 1Gb?"

No

:ok:

I've found in life that reading and taking note of the manual is the best course of action. The few occasions when I've been sure I know better have always ended in tears.

Thought as much - thanks for the reply :ok:. I'm hoping the jump from 512 to 1024 will make more of a difference than 1024 to 2048 would!!

More poke?

If you are looking for more poke on burning DVDs, etc, then the limiting factor is likely to be the speed of the drive for actually doing the burning.

If you are doing conversion of avi or mpeg files before burning then the speed of your cpu will be the limiting factor.
