Wireless Connection
 
Hi guys,

normally I take my laptop on my layovers, but I've been experiencing something strange.
My laptop connects to the available wireless but I'm unable to open the explorer.It shows me the status "connected", but when I try to open the explorer I get the is "unable to find the server" message.
What should I do?
I've tried already to change to "automatically find the settings" in the explorer tolls menu,but it did not work.
Any advice is much appreciated.

Have you been able to access the net over wireless when travelling previously?

Whose network are you connecting to?

Can you check if you are getting a valid IP address? Start, Run, cmd, ipconfig /all

If it is all 0s, or 169.something, then it's a network issue.

Do you have a proxy configured in IE? Tools, Internet Options, LAN settings.

Thanks for the reply.Yes I've used this laptop before but now I'm getting this problem.It started when someone configured it to my wireless network in my home.Regarding to your questions, I set it to automatically find the IP address.
I don't know anything about the rest of information you required.Sorry:{
I went tools menu, than lan settings and checked automatically detect settings, but is still not working.
When I use a cable to connect it works perfectly!!!:\ :\

What happens if you uncheck the Automatically detect settings?

Where do you use a cable to connect?

Can you use your home wireless OK?

I had the same problem with T-Online in southern Germany recently. No logical reason - I hadn't changed any of my settings. I tried a system restore to a time when I knew it worked - that didn't fix things. Every time it would hang on the 'proxy settings' stage of the attempted log-in, then 'server could not be found' came up.

It then fixed itself the next morning. Baffling.

One thing you could check though - go to Wireless Network Properties, click on the 'Wireless Networks' tab and highlight the name of the relevant public access network in the list displayed. Then click 'properties' and confirm under 'association' that 'Network Autherntication' is Open and 'Data encryption' is 'disabled'.

I'm running on Tmobile's hotspot in Starbucks at the moment.
It took my laptop about five tries before it opened the Explorer. No probs connecting to the server though.

It might be something to do with how often the server "calls out" to the Explorer.

Anyway - it's working fine for me now although I only have about ten seconds of air time le......................:eek:

Thank you guys,
it's really pretty strange.
I'm sure my laptop wireless device is working fine once I can connect normally in my home (using wireless).I do use the cable in some hotels that offer high speed connections in the rooms (actually, the majority of the hotels).It works perfectely under these conditions.
This wireless problem really drive me nuts sometimes:* :* :*
Anyway, next time that I have a wireless connection available away from home, I'll try to highlight the name of the server to see if it works.
I'll keep you all informed.
