Re assigning drive letters

Re assigning drive letters

With an XP computer with multiple IDE hard drives and disk drives it is possible to re-assign the letter of any drive, except hard drive (HDD) C. So CD ‘D’ can be re-assigned the letter Z by right clicking my computer, selecting manage, selecting disk management, then action, then all tasks, then change drive letter and paths.

I’ve just fitted a couple of serial ATA (SATA) HDD’s, and some of these options are not available. You can still rename a CD drive, but no longer re-assign the letter of any SATA HDD. Also, on the tab that ‘change drive letter and paths’ used to be available with my old IDE HDD’s, a new command ‘go interactive’ is now available.

Anybody know why I can’t re-assign the drive letter of my SATA HDD and what this ‘go interactive command’ does?

Have you formatted and partitioned the drives ?

Yes

In Windows XP (Pro, dunno about home) Start>Admin Tools>Computer Management

In the LH Pane, click on Disk Drives
You get a graphic display similar to Partition Magic, and righ-clicking on a drive gives you the option of changing the drive letter - handy for labling several DVD Drives in alphabetical order in the front of your case.

Your correct, my computer with IDE HDD's has this option.

But my computer with SATA HDD's does not, as posted earlier.
