I didn't click that!

I've never experienced a problem like this before and it means that this post is going to take AGES to type. Basically, I have a keyboard and mouse problem. It's occuring on and off and there seems to be no logic to when it occurs. Basically, whenever I try to click something (noteably a desktop shortcut) it's as if I've double-clicked it millions of times and it keeps opening the program again and again which causes Windows to freeze up if I don't Alt+F4 them all in time. Similarly, my keyboard keeps pressing enter of its own accord even though when I press the key nothing happens! That's why this post doesn't have paragraphs. It's very annoying and has made typing any long documents (coursework!) impossible and even trying to update the schedules isn't worth the time and effort now because of it. Though I'm no expert I have a basic understanding of how computers work and yet I have no idea what could cause this. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm using XP Pro if that's any use. More specs available upon request.

Are you using a wireless KB and mouse ? If so, change the batteries.

Nope, not wireless. They're not USB either - they just use 'normal' plugs.

Once had a similar problem with programs opening loads of times when clicked, it was caused by a cable mouse packing up replaced the mouse and all went back to normal

I did think of that and I'll try it tonight but it's a keyboard and mouse problem and the odds of 2 bits of hardware packing up at once aren't all that good. Especailly as it's newish keyboard.
