write protected floppies

Any of you good folks able to tell me how to write data onto a floppy when I keep getting "write protected" pop-up.

Basically I'm just trying to save a few JPEG images, it used to work fine but now nothing. I've tried different diskettes, made sure that the little tab is in the correct place etc.

Thanks

Sounds to me like a hardware problem. If you are sure that the tabs are in the right position, then I assume that the sensor inside the floppy drive is bent, misaligned or broken. Have you got another PC you could "borrow" a drive from and try?

Is floppy the only way you can transfer these files? It is a very old-hat way of doing things, these days. Have you considered eMail, FTP etc as easier ways to do it?

White Knight,

If you feel comfortable with opening your computer. You could check to make sure the ribbon did not partially come off the back of the floppy or the motherboard.

If the ribbon is on properly, you could try removing and putting the ribbon back on the floppy and then the motherboard. (Make sure you only do one end at a time and that you put it back exactly they way you removed it.)

Take Care,

Richard

If it happens with only 1 floppy and others are OK then duff floppy.

If it happens with all floppies then duff drive.

I have occasionally found that a temporary expedient of "adjusting" the position of the floppy with my finger (ooer missus) can help to read data off a floppy, but this is usually when alignment is out.

Floppy drives are incredibly cheap, though, except for Compaq which are unique and 10 x times standard price. Almost always very easy to replace if you are happy opening up the case. Otherwise bring it to a high street specialist.
