Bloody search engine home page

Three times this week I have booted up to find a new search engine has installed itself as my home page, what feckin right have these bastards to do this, I am not talking about some micky mouse grubby porn directory, this looks like a proper search engine.
I have installed a utility called adware which is supposed to stop these twats doing this but this one seems to be able to slip past it.
Why doesn't somebody take these bastards to the court of human rights or something.
I can get shot of it and restore my ISP home page and email access no prob, but what about some poor buggah that has just got their first puter?.
:suspect: :suspect:

Agreed TD.
These ****** should be shot.
And yes, pity the novice.
Of course their defence is that somewhere the 'user' must have agreed, albeit via a discreet 'click here'

Anyway thank yourself lucky it wasn't GoHip
That would have given you more than a mild headache.

Would a Firewall help?

WWW.zonelabs.com do a very goo free one in "ZoneAlarm".

tony draper 27th Aug 2003 03:27

I dunno, people seem to have problems with firewalls, from what I have read on other website, suddenly they can't access perfectly respectable websites they have surfed for years, things like that.
To tell the truth I hate putting any third party stuff on my machine
I remember one demo I got free on a disc, a kind of disc recovery thing, I am a tinkerer and every time I changed something it would reboot and change it back.
Fine I though, I will just delete it, when I tried it asked for a password which of course I did not have,I had to format my hard disc.

tony draper,

I agree with you about third party software. I like to keep my OS as clean as possible. I try to use as many things that are native to the OS as I can.

The real trick is to find programs that do not install anything in the Windows Registry or add any files to the Windows System. Also the best programs are ones that do not load on bootup, only when you want to use them.

If you want a firewall, your best bet is a hardware firewall, as in a Router. Programs like ZoneAlarm as been tested and shown to be an excellent program when used with Windows.

Take Care,

Richard

Thanks chaps I have downloaded spybot and will give that a try,
;)
I always keep a spare hard disk outside the machine with just a clean operating sys on it, if I do have a disaster, I just bung this in as master, configure the doomed disc as slave and copy the important stuff across, it has saved me a few times that has.
