A Tale of Two----McAfee Phone Encounters

Tale of Two McAfee Encounters

This is no longer a question, but a little story of perhaps some interest.

Recently a little window in the lower right hand corner of my dell laptop told me that someone wanted internet access, and I noted briefly that it was Skype which I was not using at the time, and so I blocked it.

Days later, {to the surprise of nobody with half a techy brain}, I could not skype without disabling my firewall (always uncomfortable). So I undertook to call McAfee tech support to get minimal help unclicking whatever needed unclicking.

The number which I had for tech support was answered a man in India by a name which I did not recognize but turned out to be “iyogi”. He wanted my name, phone number, email and assorted other information before he undertook to solve the problem.

He got inside the laptop and began nosing around in there and was somehow totally sidetracked by a workaround which Dell tech support had constructed months earlier when I could not access google. Their workaround works fine and I told him so, repeatedly.

His main focus shifted to trying to sell me their service at $170US a year, and only with great reluctance did he restore my desktop to its former appearance, removing a half dozen ugly icons which had appeared at the top of the screen. The only useful; thing he did was supply an alternate number for McAfee customer service. When the half hour call was terminated, he had not solved the problem about which I had called.

Happy ending. Yes, there was a 18 minute wait on a Sunday for an answer, but the WOMAN in India had the problem corrected within 3 minutes by having me unclick one box under the firewall settings. NO money, NO problems…case solved.
