Question OE 5.5 in Win ME won't leave e-mails on Server

For a long time I have configured accounts in Outlook Express to "Leave Messages on Server" for 21 days so that they can be downloaded to different PCs. This is useful when travelling and enabling members of a workgroup to have copies of the same e-mails.

OE 5.5, which comes in Windows ME won't cooperate. No matter what I do, after I have downloaded an e-mail it is wiped from the Server. I've tried everything I can think of and even checked the Registry settings and they agree with those I enter in the Settings Dialogue Box. Its the same in two "Identities" and 5 accoounts on two IPSs' Servers. I've uninstalled and re-installed OE/Win ME. No improvement.

Any ideas anybody, please?

Cool

I'm on ME and it's no problem. It may be the way your ISP's servers are configured by them, perhaps with a view to permanent spring-cleaning.

Just a thought.

Thanks. I'll get round to asking them eventually but it's the same with BTInternet and Tesco. It's fine with NT4 and Win 98 sitting beside the Win ME machine. I'm using those two to check the behaviour of the rogue. But if you're on ME, well...

I'll report back if I get a result.

Thumbs up

Success! As usual it was something I'd done that had an effect beyond what was supposed to happen.

For months I've been "Spammed" by someone called "Zelda" using the address "Armaggeddon"(sic). To avoid this annoyance I used a "Message Rule" so that whenever an e-mail arrived from Armaggeddon it went straight into the Deleted Folder. Then I could delete it at my leisure. This worked well for months on the NT4 and Win 98 machines using OE 5.01.

When I set up the ME machine with OE 5.5, I went a step further and altered the Rule so that messages from Armaggeddon were deleted at the Server.

You've guessed it; the Rule didn't work as it should and ALL messages were being deleted at the Server after having been received by the ME machine. This is not what should have happened at all.

I'll read up some more and find out how to use this Rule properly. Thanks to those who spent time thinking about this and sorry for the wasted effort.

Cool

Glad it worked. Don't you think though, sometimes - Come back snail-mail: all is forgiven!
