Question Networks at home

Hi,

Does anyone know of any sites that give step by step instructions to setting up a network at home. I don't want anything fancy, I don't need to share files or printers, I just want to kill my brother on Command and Conquer occasionaly.

Cheers.

If you just want to play games then you probably don't need to network as a lot of Multiplayer games allow direct cable connection. A network will need a network card fitted in each PC and a cable or wireless connection, it depends how much you want to spend.

Spec,

Thanks, but both our PCs already have network cards installed and I have all the cabling. Its just the Windows bit that I can't do. Will I have to configure one as the server and one as the client?

eeper...

I had the same fears...till I installed Windows Millenium Edition as an upgrade from W98 (available on the same CDRom for W95) - and it was all laid out for me...click, click, click...done.

And it works too!! Two desktops and a laptop - all work perfectly.

It certainly seems to have got easier with each successive iteration of Windows (since 3.1.1 first included "networking out of the box")

I'm up to Win98 at the moment (leaving others to find all the new bugz in Win2000, WinME etc - especially with the Arabic-language versions!) It's not exactly super-secure, but for "SOHO" it's ideal for sharing printers & files.

If both PC's recognise the network cards (ie the correct drivers are loaded) you can do it the following ways :-

1. If only two PC's are to be connected, get a cable that is called a 'pass thru'. This means that there is a transmit & recieve at both ends of the cable.

2. Get a mini hub (3 or 4 port). You still need the network cards in your PC to connect to the Hub. This way you can have more PC's in your network. Use any cat5 cables.

Then you need to install Microsoft Networking on all PC's and make the WORKGROUP name the same on all pc's.

Install NETBUI & TCP/IP as the protocol, and share all devices.

Sounds hard, but actually isn't. I actually do this type of stuff all day long, so its.... 'only easy if you know how' as the saying goes.

If you get stuck, let me know and I'll explain it via email on a word document.

Talking

Thanks for all your help and tips.

I managed to find a guide on a site called firingsquad.com that helped with the physical and software setup. I'm glad to say that the whole setup works like a dream, although on the downside it looks like my social life is about to disappear...

Cheers.

Red face

The bit that I can't get my machines to do is to set up a "home e-mail network" using outlook express as the base.

I would like to be able to send direct (non internet) messages from one machine to another.

How?

Eeper.
Glad you got it all running okay. But "the downside it looks like my social life is about to disappear..." is bit worrying - I guess you'll have to start talking to The Missus by email

Bear Cub,
Maybe someone will correct me, but I don't think Outlook Express supports this - I believe you need to set up the full Outlook with "local" post office - and last time I tried that (with Win 3.11 I think) I didn't find it so easy.
Perhaps you'll have to resort to walking to the next room and leaving a post-it on the wife's/daughter's/son's monitor

Question

Bear Cub.....

Silly question maybe.....however:

Why would you want to send yourself an email?

Thumbs up

Flyswift, do it all the time here as a validation of the Servers' functions and for training purposes. Costs nothing, inconveniences no-one and is a foolproof method of synchronising instantly the Outlook Express message records of several PCs - particularly mobiles. All outgoing messages are Cc to our primary e-mail address. Set the accounts to keep messages on the Server for two/three weeks and download when you want to the other PCs.

Flyswift...

Why do YOU assume that I want to send it to myself? Three machines, in three different areas - why would I be operating them all?

ExSim....yeah...that's it...local post office stuff.

That's exactly the stuff that I want to rig - but haven't a clue how to start. I've found the "fields" to fill in - but have no idea what to write in them.

Anybody know the answer?

I have recently done exactly that!!!

I suggest you use minimum of T Base 10 (10 MB/s) cable to network the computers. If you have more than 2 computers to network, then obviously you will need a hub.

Use a program called 'AllAboard' to share connections and set up network.

A crack is avaliable to turn the 30 day trial version into a 3906 day full version at http://hack.box.sk

Couldn't have been easier...had i found this program 6 weeks ago, but no i had to find it LAST WEEK! grrrrrrrrrrrr 6 weeks of my life wasted trying to get this bloddy thing working!

Any Q's just email me.
