Macbook Pro ...... such as thinner frame (a` la Macbook Air)
As the name implies "Pro" is intended for a more demanding customer base. Therefore I suspect you will find the reason the MBP chassis is the size it is due to technical or mechanical constraints (e.g. CPU, heat generation etc.)

Somehow given their trend, I don't think Apple would deliberatley miss out on an opportunity to go "smaller & lighter" if they could.

with SSD and no more HDDs with mechanical moving parts.
You obviously haven't visited the online Apple store in many years. The option of a SSD HDD custom option has been there for a long time now, well before the current refresh.

The reason it is not there as a standard option is for the very good reason of keeping the price point down.

The issue of SSD being more reliable than mechanical is debatable by the way.

Cheers mixture,
indeed I haven't snooped around the Apple Store in a while.. better take a look soon then! Re. SSD being better or not, I haven't read enough about it to really make an objectively informed decision, I was just impressed by how quiet, slim and fast the Macbook Air was when I tried it out at a duty-free shop in LGW...

MBP QuadCore sounds *very* enticing

Indeed ! Don't suppose I can interest you in an old MBP ..... one careful owner ... although quite well travelled laptop. Need to start saving the pennies.

I'm not a fan of Apple software for Windoze either...

I assume you've tried add/remove programs (or "programs and features" in vista / 7)?

yep, tried the usual removal procedures
Even tried installing a newer version of bonjour, but it will not do that if it can't remove the old one.
I'm beginning to think I'm going to have to edit the registry manually to remove every instance of bonjour, but it's like cancer in there.
Never done that before, does one just remove the lines it appears in or what?

Boldly going where no-one has gone.....

I guess the other alternative is just buy or build a new computer just to put iTunes on.

grrrr

Yes I've tried several methods obtained by google.
The problem is when uninstalling it it needs the original installation file bonjour.msi and in my case that file seems to have become corruted and keeps coming up as an invalid file. I've even tried installing a later version of bonjour and even that wants a valid old installation package.

It's beginning to look a lot like format c: and reload everything unless someone cares to volunteer to tell my wife she can no longer have iTunes.

Even apple says that you have to remove in the following order

iTunes
Quicktime
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile device Support
Bonjour
Apple Application Support.

THEN you should be able to reinstall iFeckingTunes.

I hate computers.

What's up with the new version of Firefox 4. It won't load the news section of BBC.co.uk? I went back to 3 and its playing up now. Can't even do online banking now. Oh well back to safari.

crewmeal,

No problems at all with FF4: banking, BBC News all work fine for me on two different Macs

But it will take a while before I get used to the tab bar being at the very top, and the Bookmarks where the tabs used to be

MacKeeper

Apologies if this has been asked before, but couldn't find any mention.

Does anyone have any experience of this freeware?

Is it any good?

FF4 on Mac OS 10.6 - 32 bit versus 64 bit mode.

I found an email from our work IT support about this - I right-clicked on Firefox.app in the Applications folder, chose "Open in 32 bit mode", then retried it.

Result - some stuff which hadn't worked then worked, e.g. the Audi model configurator, Webex . . .

While FF has been released as a 64-bit application for Mac and Linux, there are still many plug-ins that are not yet available for the 64-bit version.
