Mac Mail query

I am using Mac Mail as my resident mail programme. I have set the spellchecker to check spelling when I click Send. However, it also checks the spelling of any messages that I am replying to which is a pain
Do any of the resident Mac experts know how to set the spellchecker to only check my reply message and not the earlier text as well?
Thanks in advance

Why not just turn on the Check Spelling As I Type option? It's under Preferences (press the Apple Key and comma to bring up Preferences - the same in every Mac application), go to Composing and change Check Spelling.

Drauk,
I've done that but too me this is pure compromise. This way, every time I spell a word incorrectly, I have to grab the mouse, go back to the word, click on it and select the correct spelling (or mannually edit the word). With the 'check spelling on send' option, the checker highlights the word and offers the options automatically. MS Outlook manages it, this seems like one instance where MS is better than OSX - damn, it hurt saying that
