Hibernating my notebook - won't happen

This issue seemingly can't be solved by our in-house IT people. Nor did it afflict my previous notebooks.

Compaq nx9030 notebook.

Start/Shut Down/Hibernate just does nothing, the machine stays running. Other shutdown options are OK.

In Power Options/Hibernate the Enable Hibernate option is ticked.

In Power Options/Advanced/When I Press The Power Button On My Computer is set to Hibernate. That doesn't work either.

Any ideas anybody ?? A nuisance to have to shut it down properly each time, takes several minutes to restart.

Just a long shot, as I have a vague recollection of somebody with a similar problem where this was relevant: are you running XP with 1Gb or more of RAM?

Other OS's are not immune from hibernation/RAM related problems; Windows 'Me' for example. But as I say . . . . . . . . . just a long shot.

Another one, hibernation requires a special hidden partition to places the information before shut-down.

Does this partiion exist on your hard disk??

Might be an Intel Extreme Graphics driver issue, some people have had problems with drivers from 14.9 onwards. Trying reverting to an earlier version and see what happens.

Just got a message today from Microshaft that might be useful. Does your laptop by any chance show an error on startup with winsvs.* winhst32.* (apols - memory working here. Didn't realise until I saw this thread) or anything remotely similar?

Apparently there is a recognised issue with Service Pack 2 and a lot of machines are not closing down cleanly. The warning flags on startup because it was too busy trying to shut down at the time. The good news is that Micrshaft have fessed up and have a download to address the issue.

You don't necessarily need a special hidden partition for hibernation. It depends on the laptop design. Some BIOS require a save-to-disk partition, others use an immovable, contiguous file on the disk's normal file system. Some BIOS can be set up to use one or the other.

A catch though: You must have sufficient reserved space in the partition/file to cover both RAM & video memory + a small amount for overhead. If you increase the memory then you must repartition/re-establish the save-to-disk partition/file to have hibernation available again.

Thanks all who contributed. We tried these and other suggestions but no dice. Until .....

We get the monthly Windows XP updates from Microsoft which we always apply. July ones came down last week - suddenly it started hibernating. Must have been a Microsoft bug that was fixed.
