Lost! System Administrator

W2000 Pro: Normal shutdown last night, but on boot this am, 'Cannot find personal settings'. Checking file names, the 'administrator' folder in 'Documents and settings' had been renamed 'administrator.bak'.

I am in the secondary profile at this time but with no admin rights. Any ideas please?

Trend Micro 'House Call' shows no problems on my system discs

BOAC,

Do you have access to remane the adin file as your second user?

If so remane the file and reboot

If not try and log on as admin in safe mode

Thanks for the reply, Mike. While I was away I have laboriously rebuilt the administrator system with copying etc from the old folder, but it left me with having to rebuild all the email accounts, import the address book etc. A right pain. The problem I had was that without being able to log-in as 'admin' I could do very little.

More or less sorted now, so I'll stick with what I have. Any ideas what happened?

It's a while since I dabbled with Win 2k, but don't you have a "BOAC" username with Admin privileges, and a separate "Admin" with its own password?

Under Win XP I was advised not to use the "Admin" account as the primary user, for the very reason that you've just found out.

When I deleted the "Keith" account on my old PC in error a couple of years ago, I then took to being "Admin" because there was no option. That gave me access to all my stuff. I just couldn't recreate the "Keith" account without laborious effort (which I didn't bother to do).

Now that's a good idea!
