I can record audio onto a CD using the windows XP media player, but the resulting CD can only be played on computer CD players. If I try it in a Hi fi I get a 'No Disc' message.
Is it the discs I'm using that cause the problem? Or something I need to set in Windows?

Not all CD machines can play back CD-R or CD-RW disks, some will only play back certain brands of disk. it's mainly down to the varying reflectivity of the disks, the strength of the laser and the sensitivity of the sensor.
What CD machine are you trying to play the disks on, what media are you recording in, which brand of media?

Looks like it's your media, see here and here.
I suggest you buy some decent quality blank disks, e.g. TDK CD-R74 Studio.. But I'm sure someone will suggest something Aiwa/Sony compatible.
