Light Aeroplane Club Of Trinidad & Tobago
 

I'm interested to know if the LAC in Trinidad is still going. Can anyone tell me? I've looked on Google but can't find a website or anything.

My father is still a life member but at 85 he has long since given up flying - he was on the Air Training Scheme in Trinidad in 1940 and after 6 years in the RAF during WWII he returned to Trinidad. After the war he was a QFI with the club and countinued to fly with the club until 1979 when we as a family left Trinidad to live in the UK.

I have in my first log book entries of having flown various Cessnas belonging to the Club and have fond memories of local flights around the island with trips to Crown Point in Tobago. It would be a real shame if the LAC is no more. I can also remember various older aircraft such as Auster Autocrats/Autocars, an old Percival Proctor and suspended on the hangar walls the wings and tail feathers of a dismantled Tiger Moth. It would be interesting to know their fates.....

If my scanner was working I could also post some old photos....

I found this thread today by a Google search and thought that I should mention that there is a move to revive the LAC - a meting will be held at the Bel Air Hotel on November 22nd at 3.30pm.

I am assuming that you are aware that the LAC folded some years ago [for at least the second time] and that Sun Island is no more,

LAC Trinidad back in business
 

Hi Madbob,

Just to let you know, there was a meeting in the new CAA of T&T centre on Sat 28th Jan, 2012 by the LAC of T&T. An interim 6-month committee was appointed with a President (Charles something), Vice-President (Alfred Bell), Treasurer (a CAA director), and a Secretary (miss Ishta something) and about 4 other committee members.

They are trying to rejuvenate the club and intend to put together some kind of organisational structure, activities, fees etc to grow the thing.

Where you can probably help is in contributing stuff that records the history of the club. They want to have archives and/or a "museum" of sorts.

Actually I was browsing to see what the LAC website looked like and I came across your comment on this site. So I registered here just to let you know what's up.

I am not a pilot. Never even sat in a light airplane, maybe someday.

Hi trevorram,

I was browsing in this area and came across your mail. I was also interested in the Club being a life Member since joining in 1967, committee member and also the Chief Flying Instructor and Civil Aviation Examiner for many years until my departure from Trinidad in 1978.
I later learnt that the Club had folded a few years after (not my doing) ha, ha.

In December 2012 I met a few of the keen chaps who wanted to resurrect the Club and offered my services. Having not heard from them since I guess I was considered as being too old and also one of the last few living committee members or maybe I should have been more qualified.

I think also that their standards could be quite high and after 43 years of flying, 23,700 hours, and retiring after 23 years as a Boeing 747-400 Capt with Singapore Airlines I just cannot make the Grade.

Guess I will just have to be content with playing on my Yacht and when I get bored on land sail around the World again!

Hello All

The Light Aeroplane Club of Trinidad and Tobago subsequent to its last closure in 1995 was struck of the companies register of T&T. The club was re-incorporated in 2006 by Alfred Bell owner of Sun Islands Aviation Limited. The "club" at this point in time consist of private aircraft owners with an interest to get this institution going again. The club has no contitution or bank account etc at this time.

An interim committee was set up in Janurary of 2012 to examine the possibilities and start work on rules / consitution etc for the club. the interim committee conprised President Charles Carvalho, Vice President Alfred Bell, Treasurer Neil Mohammed, Secretary Ishta Rampersad and officers Sheldon Rampersad, Dirk Barnes, Vijay Persad and Jose Vasques.

The committee has been meeting monthly and workign on various projects. We have identified areas we intend to focus on: rules/constitution,legal status of the club, membership (aviation professionals and enthusiast), working with TTCAA and AATT on protocols / regulations for the club and its operations, promoting GA in the country and creating GA links with neighbouring islands.

There are draft rules and constitution to be ratified and discussions are to commence shortly with the relevant regulatory entities with respect to the club. Membership currently consist of data collection. Interested persons can join the facebook group and are added to our mailing list. There are not many activities for member at this time but that will change in the near future when memership is formalised. We have had persons contact us through the ICAD Expo 2011 at the new TTCAA facility. A couple of these persons went on a recent trip with us to Martinique for the Martinique Airshow 2012.

Hi Guys, just came across this thread.
I was a member way back in 1961. Did my first solo in VP-TAS, Auster Aiglet.
The Proctor belonged to Garth Lyder, I think (BW Capt).
Through the early 1960s I flew most of the LAC fleet.
Retired now, 19,000 hours later, I still have fond memories of the LAC.
I would have helped, but I live in the UK now.
Gaylord Kelshall at the Chaguaramas Military History Museum, still has parts of VP-TAS.
He is quite ill, spends a lot of time in bed, but it might still be worth a visit, he had quite a few photos, and some exciting stories. he lives onsite at the museum.

Thanks for the heads up with respect to Mr. Kelshall. We have worked withthe museum before in 2010 to organize a "Learn to Flt Day' which was aresounding success. Approximately 1100 people attend the one day event with 99persons afford a ride on one of the privately owned light aircraft. I will tryto post the review of our last trip which was to Martinique for an air show.
