Acquiring Canadian ATPL
Hi all
I'm considering getting a Canadian ATPL (Yes I do have the right to live and work in Canada). I currently hold both EASA (UK issued) and FAA licences, both with current type ratings on Gulfstream G-V and Citation CE-500/550/560. I've got about 4800 hours, mostly on Boeings. There appear to be two routes open to me, the IATRA process converting from my EASA licence and the FAA route, utilising my US credentials. From what I can tell, the FAA route requires only 1 written exam, and I believe my type ratings will transfer over also to a Canadian ATPL. Can someone tell me if this is correct - particularly about the ratings. Any and all info on the process is greatly appreciated. Is there any specific advantage that I may not be aware of to either process? Many thanks Ian |

I think that you're correct wrt the FAA route. However, the regs change so I suggest going to the Transport Canada website for the latest gouge. Spc9 |
I did the FAA conversion a couple of years ago. One test, and there is a company that provides a training video on line, and 30 dollars per a type rating to be transferred. Current Canadian medical also. Super simple. Did it with the YVR office.

I'm booked in to get my Canadian Medical very soon. Can I just ask, regarding my FAA type ratings, will they all transfer to my Canadian Licence (provided I pay the appropriate fee)? and if I add any further type rating to my FAA certificate, can these be subsequently transferred to my Canadian licence in the same way? You can transfer as many as you want, and if you get another type after the conversion you just show them and they'll throw it on your Canadian. Easy peasy.
The written was somewhat of a challenge. I passed with a mid 80s score, and I usually ace them. Only because I memorize the FAA exam booklets :) the closest thing I found was an online course at pilottraining.ca Google that and you'll find the conversion course in there. Helped immensely. |
Type transfer
Remember that only a P1 type will be transferred provided you show a log book containing 50 hours PIC on type

They transferred all my types, 1900, 737ng, 777 and they never looked at my log book. If it was on my FAA , they just put it on the Canadian. Never asked how much was pic sic p1 p2..... Call transport canada to make sure. Ask for Craig Leonard YVR office. Very informative. Good guy.

Is your FAA licence stand alone or is it based on another licence?
If it is based on another licence, then it cannot be converted to a TC licence in the fashion you are talking about. |
