Hi all

Right I don't know where to start but here goes, hope you can help

I am doing my PPL in the UK and once obtained I am traveling to Vancouver area Canada to do my CPL and hopefully staying there

I am on the understanding that In the UK you can start to take your ATPL ground school exam and have it frozen until you achieve your 1500 flying hours before you obtain your CPL ?

But in Canada it all seems to be different on when you need to take your ATPL exam, can anyone shed some light on this for me as I am a little confused when I need to obtain my ATPL in canada or is it worth me sitting the exam first in the UK before I leave to do my CPL , also how this would effect me on applying for a job If I did not have ATPL in Canada

Any advise would be greatful on what's the best ways to do things, even if I have not mentioned it above as I am new to this and it's a little confusing and scary lol to say the least as I don't want to waste time or money on things I did need to do

There is no frozen ATPL in Canada.

The normal progression is to complete a CPL, MULTI IFR. If you are going to fly in a 2 crew airplane, you'll also need to complete an exam called the IATRA exam. This exam is basically the ATPL exams trimmed down a little.

Or once you have 750 hours you may write the 2 ATPL exams. When you obtain the ATPL flying requirements from the CARS, you can apply and receive the ATPL.

Another way is to complete the Integrated ATPL course which allows you to write the ATPL exams with 200 hours instead of 750 hours. You still don't get a ATPL until you have the flying requirements from the CARs.

In Canada the majority of pilots get their start in general aviation, almost none get their start in a Transport Category aircraft. It is the blessing and curse of the Canadian system of aviation.

Cheers Adam .... Do you know the cost of the exams also, what advise would you give .....I.e do i do my PPL in the UK and don't bother with the UK ATPL exam and travel to Canada just with my PPL to start my CPL and work my way toward the canadian way of life ?
Am I right to think that I do not require ATPL in Canada to earn a living and the ATPL is for passenger flying on the bigger commercial airline ?
What advise would you give from start to finish on me arriving in Canada ?

TC Exams are $105/each

I would fly in Canada, you are paying at least twice as much as you would in Canada to fly. Of course I'm biased.

Networking with other pilots/operators and having the right attitude/personality would probably the biggest factors in getting an aviation career underway.

Before you can even *think* of working here, make sure that you can get a work permit..
I'd suspect that doing all of your licences here would be the cheapest. If you are going to get a CPL/IFR etc.. might as well start here with the whole thing... !!DON"T!! put any money up front (and a reputable place shouldn't ask you to..)

You won't need an ATPL for most entry-level jobs, however you'll need one (or either the IATRA or the SARON/SAMRA (Canadian ATPL exams) written) before you get on a 2 crew machine.
