Bruised 777 - YYZ?

Has anyone heard of a recent event at YYZ of a 777 rolling ahead from the gate and getting somewhat damaged?

Too bad if it's true - beautiful machine!

Happened a few months ago to one of AC's first B777s. Minor damage only.

TAFB60 24th February 2008 14:35

Alot more than just minor damage.

Aircraft was out of service for 5 days.
Nose gear had to be replaced, Skin badly damaged in a few spots.
Cost of repair + Cost of A/C sitting idle + Lost Revenue = $17 Million

The airplane was just in it's 2nd week of service.

Okay. I was just going on what I read elsewhere. :suspect: I guess they did a good job of keeping it quiet (until now!).

Bruce Lee probably forgot the park brake:{

It wasn't that bad.

AC was conmming into the gate (at YVR) and the bridge wasn't in the parking circle. The ramp guys marshalled it in and the engine cowl contacted the bridge. Didn't tear the skin but put an out of limits dent in it. They ended up ferrying the AC to Montreal for repairs and ended up putting the nose cowl off a newly delivered 777 on it.

Would have been easier to truck the cowl from Seattle.

The incident that I am making reference to happened in YYZ last
summer. Aircraft was parked at the gate. Capt released the park brake
before the aircraft was connected to the tug and the aircraft rolled backwards into ground equipment.

Incorrect. The aircraft WAS connected to the tug. The aircraft park brake was released and then the aircraft and tug rolled.

If I understand correctly, then there's been two separate incidents with an Air Canada B777???

Wow, I guess these small incidents are not unusual.

TAFB60 6th March 2008 15:56

I was told that the tow bar was connected only to the aircraft and not the tug. I stand corrected.

Sorry, You were told wrong.

Lots of info here:

AC fin 731 was ready for departure doing flight 856 YYZ LHR. It rolled back about 8 ft causing some serious damage. Tug was hooked up to tow bar and aircraft. Maybe Tug was not strong enuff to hold this beast,,

The long and the short of it is this.

Captain was told to release brakes. He did. Gate was not in proper retract position. Tug driver left tug without setting brakes, aircraft rolled forward and contacted gate.
