PENNFIELD, N.B. -- Eyewitnesses are telling a local radio station that a plane has crashed in flames in southwestern New Brunswick.
The plane, described by some as a four-engine aircraft, apparently went down in water near Pocologan, N.B.

RCMP have not confirmed the reports.

However, Transport Canada will only say that they have no reports of any missing civilian aircraft.

CBC News reporting that military search and rescue have a Herc and a Commorant helicopter on scene. Eyewitnesses claim to have seen a small aircraft flying very low, although no one has yet to come forward who has actually seen a crash.

Weather is clear, and nearby is an airfield used by private aircraft - a former WW2 training base. So far, no aircraft reported as missing, and all military aircraft are accounted for.

Searchers find nothing following unconfirmed reports of plane crash in N.B.

POCOLOGAN, N.B. (CP) - A search has been called off after police and military officials failed to find evidence of a reported plane crash in southwestern New Brunswick.

Officials had received unconfirmed reports that a low-flying plane had crashed.

Witnesses told a local radio station that an aircraft went down in the water, but spokespeople for the military and the police say they were unable to find any evidence of a crash and no aircraft were reported missing.

Pat Jessup, a military spokeswoman, said the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax received two phone calls from people claiming they saw a small plane flying low over the area, headed toward the Bay of Fundy.

A coast guard cutter, a Hercules aircraft and a Cormorant helicopter from Canadian Forces Base Greenwood, N.S., were dispatched to the area.

RCMP said it was possible that the witnesses may have been mistaken.

"We have not found any evidence of a plane crash yet," said Sgt. Dave Carey, who is based in nearby St. George.

"We have a witness who saw a low-flying aircraft, but no crash site . . . There's no plume of smoke. There's no indication of any debris."

He said all military and civilian aircraft scheduled to be in the area have been accounted for.

Transport Canada also confirmed that they have no reports of any missing civilian aircraft.

Capt. John Pulchny, a military spokesman, said a Hercules cargo aircraft was in the area on a training mission but the control tower at its home base in Nova Scotia has been in contact

Q. If what you say you saw never happened, are you really a witness ? ;)

Must have been pretty strong stuff to turn smoke flares into a four engined aircraft ... what they growing in N.B. ?.

Nothing further on this story(sic) but I speculate the Herc was dispensing flares and this was umm.. interpreted as 'being on fire' :=
