Transport Canada and the D-15
 

Hello,

Currently, only two aviation authorities approve the Farnsworth D-15, Transport Canada and New Zealand for an unrestricted class 1. Does anyone have any insight on whether this could change (Become more restricted in the future- E.g. CAD testing). I am colour-blind, protanomaly, and failed the CAD test. The CAD test has a pass mark of 12 units, above that, you fail. If Canada decided to remove the D-15 and replace it with the CAD would:

Existing pilots who passed the D-15, but failed the CAD have their medicals revoked?
Would the pass mark be the same 12 units for protans or could it be dependent on the authority (I scored 17.25)
Does anyone know if this is under review to change the D-15?

I am asking because I passed the D-15, under medical conditions, (I'm from the UK) and looking to start flight training in Canada. I would hate to arrive and in a few years they suddenly say I am not medically fit. I understand these are tricky questions, but if anyone could provide any information it would be greatly appreicated.

Your best bet is to contact TCCA Civil Aviation Medicine (CAM) directly as only they can answer your questions.

If they did change the rules, it is likely that any pilots affected would be handled on a case-by-case basis, as it is up to the pilot to make sure they continue to meet the requirements of their medical, whatever those rules are.

Depending on when you're coming to Canada, I'd maybe call a few times. Once right now to get it out of the way, and once again just before you come. That way if the rules have changed that quickly (an adjective that is never levied against TC for anything), you can quickly change your plans without having moved across the pond.

Generally if you meet the standard at time of license issue your medical will not be down graded as part of a blanket policy change unless there is an issue specific to you that casts your ability in doubt. I have heard no indication that the Farnsworth test is being reconsidered by Transport Canada and have recently dealt with this issue for a friend.

If it was the process will likely take years before coming into effect so I would consider you should have no problem getting the medical and completing your training.

However you will probably never be able to hold an EASA license.
