Ice flying near Sudbury ONT
Can anyone point me towards a flying school or other organisation that could get me flying off frozen lakes in the first week of February?
I did my float endorsement with Sudbury Aviation but they are currently without an instructor, I have a Canadian private and a valid medical. Thank you for any suggestions that you can offer. |
The National Bush Plane Museum in Sudbury may have some useful contacts. (Ice flying is GREAT fun! First time I tried it, we touched down on a large lake where the weight of the ice had forced water up onto the surface. On touchdown, water sprayed everywhere - I thought we'd broken through the  ice!!! Oh, and watch out for frozen snow machine tracks too - it's like hitting concrete. Have fun! :ok:) |
Lake Country Airways near Orillia offers float plane training. I wonder if they offer flying on skis in the winter? [email protected]

Ask at Elmhirst Air in Keene Ontario (near Peterborough), they may have a ski plane available. I'm pretty sure that Lake Country Airways is not ski flying, but you can inquire there, Jeff may know someone else who is. Ski flying is not a common rental opportunity, too many variables. Ski planes are typically either working planes, or privately owned.

I did convert to Ski with Bill in Stewart Lake Airways east of Kenora in the fall of 1992, just before I left for Norway.
Now that was fun, but nothing I would rent out to an average Private Pilot , with all due respect. It was a C185 that we used on floats in the summer. BTW interesting how soon it came to a stop on cold frosty ice. And according to Bill , if wet ice he had a trick were he kicked it into a groundloop and added power going backwards to stop. Not sure if that was just a good story, but knowing him I suspect he did it . Worked like a charm until he hit a rut, according to his son!! Anyway Try Kenora, a great place for any stuff like this! Thanks for the input, in the end I couldn’t find an alternative, so I’ll try again next winter and will also try and get out to do a little more float flying this summer, in the meantime back to the day job and the 737 |

Sorry I suppose Sudbury is a bit of a distance from Kenora, I did not read the big print! And You are , I suppose , fare from an average Private pilot. Anyway Good luck next season. Regards Cpt B |
