First medical with glasses
 

Hey all,

Last year my CAME suggested I have my eyes tested for this years' medical because I was right on the edge for the "uncorrected" tests in my left eye. I went to an optometrist yesterday who confirmed I'll need glasses.

My medical is tentatively booked for Tuesday, but I won't have my first pair of glasses until Friday at the earliest.

I want to make sure that my thinking is correct: Because I now need glasses, my medical would be assessed as "unfit" until I bring the glasses with me and I should therefore delay my medical until they're in hand.

I do have a report from my optometrist which states what my vision was uncorrected and corrected, so I don't know if that would help my cause or would they still have to list me as "unfit."

While I do plan on calling my CAME prior to the exam and talking to her, I'm looking to put my mind at ease for the rest of the weekend lest my wife kill me over this years' "medical mystery problem."

Been there done that. If you know what strength your prescription glasses are, just pop out to a London Drugs or something similar and grab yourself a pair of reading glasses. That should suffice just fine, at least for the medical. During the medical, they'll simply ask you to read something unaided and then with your specs. Shouldn't be a drama whatsoever.

Non-prescription reading glasses only correct for presbyopia. Reading glasses do not correct for myopia, hyperopia nor astigmatism.

I know and unless one is on the verge of requiring coke bottle bottoms for lenses, reading glasses will, in my experience, get the job done for medical at least. Just sayin.....

I have a pair of prescription sunglasses for flying. If it is a dull day, I use cheap reading glasses for reading charts and the panel, and peer over them to look outside. I used the reading glasses for my last medical with no problems.

Not quite to the point of needing coke bottles yet, but I think the issue with reading glasses I may run into will be that my right eye will not have a correction - it's still 20/20. It's only my left eye that refuses to play the game...so I might run into the opposite problem as most reading glasses I've seen have a correction in both lenses.

I'll post tomorrow what my CAME's response is when I call her so everyone knows whether the paperwork seals the deal or whether first timers to glasses need the pair in hand.

Could you just remove the right lens??

Just so its here in case anyone else has a similar question, my CAME said so long as you have the paperwork that shows what the results were and that you have ordered the prescription, they can issue the medical as fit.

Interestingly I still passed the "uncorrected" vision test this year by the hair of a small rodent so I wonder if Transport is overly generous or if my optometrist is trying to screw my benefits plan :)

Also. My CAME mentioned that starting in 2017, Transport Canada will start tracking our waist circumference, BMI and cholesterol levels along with a couple other changes they've been saving since 1981.
